Thor ACE grill screen

I shuttered when I saw my new ACE 29.3 did not have anything to block rocks from flying into the aluminum radiator. Failing to find any screens offered I went to the local Menards and scrounged around. I found some of that metL gutter guard with what I think is an idea size mesh. I put the panels together and mashed the seam, cut to size and screwed on. Here are some pics

Cost was about $23. Took 8 panels

Wow! Great timing I've been trying to come up with a way to cover and protect my radiator for our up coming trip to Alaska! Thanks for all the pictures too.

That's awesome! We went in 2013. You will have a great time! I would definitely protect the radiator on the thor and I have not done it yet and you should enclose the bottom between the facia and radiator. I am sure the roads are not any better than before and between there and back I would guess we did 250-300 on gravel roads. Only 2 ways in if driving and went went thru dawson city and came back on the Cassiar.

I used #8 1" long screw and washers. Mine has a plastic insert behind the chrom grill so I was able to screw into that. Obviously yours could be different so check. Whole project took about 1-1/2 hours.

I used stucco netting
purchased at Lowes and painted black. Does double duty as a rock guard and stops that annoying 'Hurricane whistle' at speed.

Yeah I looked at that and decided against it as the mesh was wider and it was more flexible than I wanted. It certainly is an option anyone considering the mod should consider, I am considering using that for a rock guard underneath. A big sheet of this is cheap and I think it was only like $8. Thanks for bringing it up. Options are always good for folks!

Not only did you give yourself some radiator protection, but it flat out looks great! Good job!

Great job, Knight. One (stupid) question. Although I absolutely agree with protecting the radiator and tranny cooler from rocks and other debris, do you happen to know if this mod impacts or restricts air flow? I really want/need to do this mod also but was concerned with the possible cooling restrictions and effects.

I do not have any proof it doesn't but the grill cover that was on my last motorhome had smaller mesh than this does so I am going to venture a guess that no it will not impact the cooling. Your fan is also pulling air in thru the radiator along with the forced air of speed. I personally have no concerns at all.

Nice job!

That's pretty much exactly the OEM mesh design used on my Hurricane's grill.

by the way Don, it was not a stupid question but a very valid one. The only stupid questions are those that are not asked when you need to know!

Thanks for the followup, Knight. I appreciate it. I would like to know if you have or see any issues once you get to use it on the road.
Again, AWESOME work. And great pictures to show your mod...that is always helpful to us!
