Actually, the coolant level in the recovery tank should RISE when the engine is hot (the heated coolant expands into the recovery tank) and DROP when the engine cools down (the coolant is pulled from the recovery tank back into the radiator).

Ghost shutdowns with no codes can be a real pain to isolate - good luck!!

supposed to pick up at the dealer today but it had on the dash a symbol of a gear with an exclamation mark in it and the eng symbol light on with warning buzzer on. Will have to wait till this coming week to find out what this is.
Any guesses????

I do not have access to my owners manual to understand what these symbols represent. Good luck with getting these issues fixed and please let me know what dealer had to say about this problem.

Navistar made the 6.0 liter engine for my (two) Ford f250 had the same shut down
problem. The first one would die on acceleraton. They said it was a sensor. could not
pinpoint the problem. They hooked up a computer to diagnose when it happened.
No luck. Lemon lawed the first P/U. Bought another ford f250 (stupid) lost two
turbos in 10000 miles. I hope your engine is not the same family.

charge air cooler hoses popping off and then having a fit to keep them seated is an easy fix...surprised the engine tech didn't do it, or maybe he did but needed a few dollars

its not just a navistar engine issue
all the engines that use pcv to catch the oil vapors vice a slober tube to comply with the epa 07 and above requirements

the pressurized hoses leaving the turbo and going to the charge air cooler and the hoses leaving the cooler going back to pressurize the intake
get oil residue in them from the pcv vale vapors (oily mist) some engine guys have made a coarse filter to catch the vapors as they condense so the oil drains back into the engine vice making its way through the charge air cooler and hoses

your engine plumbing may have the pcv hose positioned in a way that might allow oil vapors to enter the charge air cooler, vice drain back.
when you shut off the engine the oil vapors condense and settle in the low places or mating edges of hoses and pipe points

HOWEVER
the ease to get the hoses to stay attached is straight forward.

1. remove the hoses spring clamps
2. back off the hoses at the connection
3. generously wash the pipe and the hose mating surfaces with alcohol
remove all the oil residue, soaked cotton rag
4. wash them again
5. one more time and allow to dry
6. take a piece of clean white t-shirt material and wipe off the pipe and hose inside surface, if its dirty...wash them again
7. buy a can of CHEAP hair spray,
8. apply a coating of said hairspray to the pipe and the hose mating surfaces
9. allow to air dry
10 reapply a light coat again
11. attach the hose to the pipe and put into correct position
12 re-torque the spring clamps to the correct torque.
13. allow everything to dry about 5 minutes

should last long time now at staying attached.

We had the warning light come on and the Low Coolant message would only display for a short time. I was close to home and luckily it didn't shut down. There is only one coolant sensor and its in the plastic coolant tank. I replaced the sensor $14 and no more warnings. Replacing the sensor is very easy and no coolant leaks out when you remove the old sensor.

Thanks Vedginout! Maybe I will purchase a sensor and put it in my tool box and change it out of I have another "Low Coolant" light and the fluid level is OK. Happy RVing!

Thanks Powerboatr! My wife always has hair spray so all I need to do is get some rubbing alcohol and keep it in the RV to use if that hose comes off again. I did notice during my failed attempts to get the hose to stay connected that there was a film of oil on the hose and I attempted to wipe it off with a dry cloth but now I see that I need the alcohol to clean and the hair spray to act as a sealing agent. Thanks again! USMC (Retired 84).

Since I last reported my engine has worked without a problem and I have put about 2000 miles on the MH. This weekend on the way to a state park 140 miles from home, while pulling a hill, I suddenly heard, what sounded like an air leak. There was no corresponding loss in power like what occured when the turbo hose kept coming off. We were close to the camp ground so we kept driving. I opened the front hood after we arrived but did not find anythng loose. It rained all day yeasterday so I will pull the doghouse today to see if I can find the cause of the noise. BTW, the noise was the loudest when the engine is under a load. I will let everyone know what I discover.

After spending about 1 1/2 hours looking for something loose and finding everything secure, no loose clamps or hoses I noticed the intake hose to the air filter was jammed behind the passanger side head light housing. I pulled it loose and found a hole in this hose that was worn through do to it's position behind the head light. I cleaned the hose and used some all purpose fixer, "DUCT TAPE" to repair the hole. We will see tomorrow when we head home if this fixed the air leak noise?

thanks for the info ; I'm going to go check mine. By the way the first time I pulled the dog house it was a bear as it had tons of excess glue holding it down.

I have removed my doghouse several times and each time I need to use something to break the seal. I guess this is good and bad. I like the idea of a tight seal but it can be a pain if you need to remove it for service.

Well folks we are back to a loose/blown hose again that was causing the air leaking noise. I managed to get it back home and to the shop that replaced the last hose provided by Navistar. 5300 miles, 5 trips to the shop, 3 were towed. I do not know how I will ever be able to have the confidence to go on a long trip with this MH. I am so disappointed!

let us know how they reattach it. I remember in 03 ford was having these issues with blown turbo hoses. Google "blown turbo hose" ; gives the jist of the issue and the cure.
