Just had my first oil change on the MaxxForce 7 V8 (W20D). The dealer said everything was great, but warned me to change the oil much more often than the 10K recommendation in the manual.

Said this engine was prone to fuel leaking past the rings into the oil, thereby fouling the oil.

I've seen nothing about this from Workhorse. Opinions, please! A dealer trying to make more money or a true concern. One of the things I like about a diesel is the longer service intervals.

I thought this was a new engine chassis configuration by Workhorse. Seems to me if your check the oil level during the 10,000 miles and it shows no drop-age in oil I don't see where the dealers coming from.
I just bought a Ford Fusion and it says 10,000 oil change in manual yet dealer has a 3000 mile sticker on windshield.
I guess we both need to double check.

Looks like the Dealer wants to keep his shop busy !?
As lang as you go acc. to the Manual and prove of service, nothing can go wrong. I change everything acc. to the Manual or earlier (once a year or 6 month).

And I thought some Cummins and Caterpillar distributors and dealers were hungry! If Navistar International knew they were saying that they would receive some unwanted attention from their engine factory service representative. That is reckless talk and unwarranted for that engine. You would be able to tell something is wrong with an engine that had such poor combustion or fuel nozzle leaks that caused fuel dilution of the oil. Bet the Service Manager did not say that.

Keep an eye on the oil level. If it's rising (aka "making oil"), then you probably have a fuel dilution problem. Otherwise......

If I wanted to know the facts and do away with all opinions, I would do an oil analysis at the next oil change. Just the facts Ma'm, just the facts, as Sgt Joe Friday would say.

Best Regards,

rops

Have a Vesta with Max Force engine. After 3500 miles it appeared that the oil was down 1 qt. Drove to Canada, put 1300 miles on it and when I checked the oil it was up to the full mark. Rechecked the level many times @ 3500 & 4800 miles with the readings remaining constant. Had the oil changed @ 4850 miles since we are planning to go the Yellowstone next week. After reading other comments regarding the engine ( regen failure) I wish we we pulling a toad ( for safety sake)!!

We are also seeing posts from owners that said all they had to do was drive it a little bit and the regen light when off. All modern 2010 emission diesel engines will regen because they need to clean the EGR.

I have come to find out that the MaxxForce 7 engines ship with 10W-30 oil. Just make sure that it meets or exceeds the API CG-4 rating. In warmer climates you can use 15W-40.

Driver: Why do the Max Forces only need CG oil? I though that anything with a DPF needed CJ-4. CG oil is many generations old??

Call it fat fingers, a just now over-site committee and lack of a technology spell checker. You are absolutely right!

Modern diesel engines; 2010 emissions need CJ-4 oil ... it's right on the fill cap. If any other oil other than CJ-4 is used an owner would be regenning from here to the end of time but way before that the DPF would be toast.

Thanks for the heads up!

1. Why was the new API CJ-4 oil performance category developed?
New emission standards for heavy-duty engines will be phased in between 2007 and 2010. Engines meeting these new standards will be equipped with advanced emission control technologies, including diesel particulate filters (DPF) and in most cases exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The new API CJ-4 performance category was developed to address both the unique needs of these new engines and to protect older engines while enhancing the life of the emission control system as required for regulatory compliance.

We are all human and mistakes seem to get more common as we get older!! Actually I don't think you can even buy CG4. CI is still available for pre DPF engines but I bet it too will be gone soon. I was also interested in your statemenet that the Max Force uses 10/30. Do all the Max Force power plants use that multigrade? Thanks

moisheh, My comment was specific to the MaxxForce7. The OE load that ships from Huntsville is 10W-30.
