Start-up after storage

I have been asked to pick up a unit that has been sitting for approximately two months. It has a MaxxForce engine. I have been looking online for an engine manual, but so far no luck. I want to make sure there aren't any special procedures before I start the engine, since it has been sitting for a little while. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
E.

Start-up after storage

2 months is not long at all. Start it and let it warm before leaving. Since you dont know the unit I would check fluid levels, tire pressure, be sure it comes up to proper air pressure and ride height ok and test the brakes a few times before heading down the road

Sitting and idling won't bring the engine up to running temp. Be easy on the throttle when first starting out, don't idle for more than 5 min, use high idle during that time.

x2 you do not want to let this engine idle to long.

Thank you for the help. I didn't think two months was a terribly long time, but since I am not familiar with this engine (and have read some of the bad press associated with it), just wanted to make sure.

Thanks again! Happy Motoring!

For most of us these engines have been trouble free. As already mentioned and with any new diesel Idling is your enemy. Other than that it will start and work the same as any other diesel. Don't baby it when your on the road this engine is meant to work, and the coaches are an easy load for them. Put your foot into it and don;t worry if you see the engine temp creep up to 215 (the clutch fan will kick in at that temp and drop it down a bit) these engines like heat and it helps with the emissions.

So get in there and really drive.

Two months isn't that long. I recommend "priming" before starting. Turn the key on and wait for the "Wait to Start" light to go off then turn off and wait about 30 seconds and do it again. I have found that two to four times doing this may be required.
In any case always wait for the "Wait to Start" light to go off before trying to start.

I have a 3 page file on the Maxxforce engine that I cannot upload ( for some unknown reason ). If you want me to email it to you PM me. it pretty much goes along with Traps90 advice. These are good engines and they need to be driven like you mean it, not babied .
