If this is a recommened option by the manufacture then it would be your choice, if not, I would be hesitant especially if you are still under engine warranty. Personally, I change my dino oil every 5000 miles or 1 yr, whichever comes first. To use syn oil in my case would be an unnecessay expense.

If it meets/exceeds Cummins lubrication specs, fits the parameters of your driving, and it's what you desire, go ahead. Usually the only reason to use 0W, or 5W oils are when you will be in cold climates - 0*F or below.

That is all that I use. Although I only drive about 8,000 miles a year I change the oil every two years. What I do is change the filter every year and do an engine oil analysis ever year. If the analysis comes back bad or in question then I will go ahead and change that year. So far I have not had a bad analysis, yet.

I have always used Donaldson Filter's but another forum has convinced me to switch to the CAT filter's.

Now I know I will catch some flack on this but as long as my oil analysis says that I am alright I will stick with my practice.

I also use Synthetic oil in my rear end and my front hubs. Heck I even use the Synthetic grease.

I have a DP with a 3126 CAT engine. CAT is the ones that do my oil test, called SOS. I use 15 - 40W Diesel Motor Oil.

I have ask CAT if my rig was under warranty would I have a problem. Thier reply, only if I was not using their filter.

Switching to synthetic oil was a topic at the Cummins forum at FMCA rally last month. Cummins says it is OK to use the oil, BUT, it does not extend the change interval. With the cost of synthetic oil and the same change interval, I'm goiing to stay with Dino.

OneRVer: I agree with you completely! In fact, if you have a analysis done on the syn oil at the end of the second year you may not have to change your oil then, only the filter. However, you must run the engine often enough to get the moisture out.
It is your engine.

I agree. I have thought often to move it another year but with the HEUI I do not want to take any chances. But you are right. As long as the oil test comes back positive I should be alright.

What do you do and what oil do you use. I am using Amsoil.

OneRVer: I had to follow the warranty instructions. But I will go to syn next change.

I have an 04 Mustang GT (since new) and have only changed the filter every 5,000 miles. Been doing this for four (4) years. At times some of the driving has been severe. 1/4 mile track. Total mileage 46,000.

Too many experts on this subject. Real life is another matter.

Stay with what works for you. Most syn oil has a high percent of mineral oil anyway.

Kerry
