Those of you and I that have this vintage ISC in a F/L Frame.
Has anyone installed a coolant filter? For some reason F/L doesn't install a coolant filter in this xcr chassis.
i do the regular sca checks, but a filter with the sca seems to be a better option.
I was looking around under there and would like to get thoughts on where you folks put one, or where its installed in other coach builders
thanks

I just changed my coolant and filter. Used a 0 DCA filter as I added DCA as I refilled the system. There's really no difference in how DCA is added, just so there's enough in the system without having too much!
Once the casting sand is knocked out of the engine I really can't see a need to a filter either.

I talked to a service center this morning and the reason i was told is that the newer coolants does not need the filter as long as we continue to check the sca levels IAW the maintenance books.
doing the check is easy enough, plus it gets you up close and personal with the engine.
also was told the newer engines do not have a sand issue from castings.
this i find unbelievable as my 06 6.0 was pretty sanding from day one
sca was good and the a/c is all charged up and we are ready for along trip

I know you would think that the service center should know about things like that. But they do not. Even some Cummins distributor service people say some really stupid things. When it comes to cooling systems and coolants there is more absolute baloney being put forth as gospel truth. I can assure you that coolant filters on Cummins engines are very much endorsed by Cummins. Unfortunately, they did take the filter head option off the ISL and from your note, I guess some ISC. The C8.3 and early ISC had the filter on the engine. Cummins Application Engineering advises their OEM customers to put a coolant filter on. Core sand is still very much an issue. Water filters also remove other dirt and particles that can be detrimental to the water pump seal as well as the aluminum used in radiators.
There are coolant manufacturers, notably Shell, Texaco, Chevron who say their OAT coolants do not need filters. You have to understand where they come from. Their point of view is that coolant filters with DCA are no longer needed for their chemistry. You still need the filter to remove sand, dirt, "stuff" as well as removing some oil contamination and even "gel" from some coolants.
