Help.... I have been left on the side of the road due to a clogged dpf. I had to pay $850. because cummins said I let it idle too long. Well I do not let it idle at all. Now I have 23k on it. I am about 40k lbs plus toad and I run about 69 mph. Left S Dakota and it happened again... Called Cummins and was told to keep it in low gear and drive the **** out of it. I was able to save a tow.. kept getting regen needed and required. The high temp light never came on just the regen light. Now I am scared. Cummins says the way I drive it I should not have these problems. Before this trip I had the cummins shop check how offten it did a regen and the tech said every 12 hours...the cummins rep said that is too often. I get 6.1 mpg and it does not burn oil.... what gives????????

Someone needs to check something. We have the 425 07EPA engine and had the Regen light come on twice in 22k+ miles. One of those times was right after we picked it up as the dealer tends to idle them for excessive time.
Regardless, your repairs should be well covered under warranty as emissions control are a REQUIREMENT.

Sorry you're not getting any responses clnhse. We just got back from a 10,600 mile trip to Alaska and back and never got a regen light. I'd do some talking to Cummins repair shops and get it to the best one you can find. The ISL should be recording run hours, idle hours and faults, and should tell the engine guys more about what's going on. Sometimes the squeaky wheel has to get quite loud before it gets a shot of grease.
Keep us informed.

clnhse,
Ours was built before particulate filter requirements, but 6.1 mph seems very low for MPG.
Maybe mine would drop that far if I ran 69 MPH, but I doubt it. High fuel use (if it is not being burned totally) would cause the problem you are having with the PDF.
Pigman,
What mileage did you get on that trip to AK and back. Since you have the PDF engine, you would probably be closer in mileage than I would.
I also would find a different Cummins shop to work on it as the one you are dealing with is doing nothing to fix the problem.

Our overall mileage on the trip up and back to AK was 6.88. Trip up was with a coach weighing around 36,700 pulling a 3500lb toad. My usual speeds are in the area of 64 MPH where the roads permit. Coming down we were probably running in the area of 38,000 and the toad was about 6800. (A lot of salmon. How much does 12 cases of canned salmon weigh?) Speeds down were probably in the 68MPH range.

clnhse- I suspect bad ECM programming. Had a customer that bought 5 trucks w/the dpf and all 5 died on the road regularly w/clogged dpfs. Once Cummins straightened out the ECM programming they ran fine. I've had two regens in 11,000 and that's after running a couple tanks fo Mexican non-ULSD fuel thru it. Regens happend exactly according to the book. I'm still a bunch of ECM program versions behind current and due for reflash @ Cummins when I can get in for the 3 campaigns that are due.
You can call Cummins w/your engine serial number (its on a plate on the rear block upper passenger side, facing upward) and they should be able to tell you what version ECM software you have, and what the current correct version is for your block.
@ 6.1 you are at least on the low side of what I'd expect. I'm getting 7.9 @ 34,000lbs but running about 58-62, mostly near 62. Fuel rate could also be snafu'd in your program. Another possibility is your charge air cooler (intercooler) is not sealed properly so you are not getting proper boost, and therefore you are burning rich (this can be blown intercooler, bad seal on piping connection, split intake pipe or elbow, etc). Might be other issues that would cause this as well (maybe stuck injector(s)?).
Definitely time for a proper diagnosis by a good drive train shop.

Cummins send someone here 30 days ago to fix the ECM. They also put on a new turdo for good luck. The claim they did a smoke test and everything was fine. The local dealer said the Cummins rep installed somethings they were not able to do. I never never let it idle. All I got on this one was 25 hours until it clogged. You would think if they could not fix then who could. I cannot find any bad problems like mine. I have had 12 different DPF issues........I have had enough.

i was just reading my isl/isc book and I have never received a regen light, i have just over 5k miles and she idles not a huge amount of time but i would say 30 mins total per day.
my book says normal heavy driving will generate enough heat to clean the dpf filters,
12 hrs for regen sounds like way to much fuel and its causing excessive soot
or the dpf sensors are AFU and reading a back pressure out of limits, on my engine there are three pressure sensors on the dpf alone, any one could throw a wrench in the works
either way
cummins should be getting it right.
your air filter is clean right?
fuel filters?
correct engine oil
and correct ultra low sulfur fuel

I have changed the fuel filters 5 or 6 times
I just installed a new air filter
I make sure and use the correct oil
I have been very very careful to use only ultra low sulfer fuel.
I get only 6.1 mpg?????
I am waiting for Cummins response.

There is a answer to your regen problems. However you might not like them..
1 Take your DPF off and have it cored out.
2.Install some 3 amp resistors
your fuel mieage will double and the power increase is fantastic. 12 to 14 mpg.
Down side you will void your warranty.
I have done it to motorhome and my flat bed truck.
you need to take it to an off road diesel repair shop it's for racing applications only.

Not to mention a violation of federal law. I hear the penalties are really severe for modifying diesel emissions equipment, but haven't seen anything official in writing.
