135,000 mile life for a CAPS pump?

My motor started throwing codes and engine "WARNING" light at 135000 miles. Cummins shop says pump (see title) is bad. Happened 2 hrs after a refuel. My experience with OTR trucks is 600 - 700 THOUSAND miles of life before you're looking at any issues! Course anything mechanical can fail at any time but I think the odds are against it. They say they're still "diagnosing" so its not for certain but they got a "bunch of pump codes". Hmmm...

"Mechanics hate it when customers think they are smarter than they are...customers hate it when that proves to be true!!!"

What specific codes do you see? Just for them to tell you that the engine is "throwing codes" don't mean squat. I would call BS on this one. Codes are pretty specific.

There is the possibility that it could be nothing more than dirty fuel filters.

I believe that Cummins places want to do a bunch of "diagnosis" just to run the repair bill up. I have lost all faith in Cummins shops. Find an independent diesel shop and you will be much happier.

Just remembered my friend had some pump codes and it turned out that the transient surge suppressor was bad. It is a little thing, about 2 inches long that keeps voltage spikes from getting back into your ECM. Cummins shop said pump and another shop said suppressor. $120 worth of parts later coach running fine, Cummins was $3500 for new pump which would not have cured the problem.

Just found the CAPS thread...yikes. Unfortunately, its not driveable and I'm 3700 miles from home so I'm kind of committed to this shop.

Thanks.

Should i keep/buy my old CAPS pump (core) and have it independently tested? Then have it rebuilt and keep as a spare? Gives me some assurance that the shop did a correct diagnosis.
