I plan to travel to California next weekto pick up a 92 wb adventurer that has this engine. I started it last April, but it has not run since. Needs batteries. I am driving t to Aberta, canada next week, think I should change oil and filter and assme this can be done with out getting under the queen bed. Where or who should I contact to get the correct information about qantity and type of oil and filter, plus any specal items to consider. On my trip to see the unit there were no manuals and I can not locate any on line. I have not owned a motor home so I know these questions might seem a strange. I just want to be prepared and with limited time and $ don't want to have to go to a dealer for service at least until I get it back to a service facility here in Edmonton.
Thank you

I have a 1996 5.9 and it takes four gallons of oil. My understanding is that the amount your engine takes would depend on the size of the oil pan.

While others will probably provide a long list of things you should do before going very far, I'll answer your question and say yes, the oil and filter change can be performed from underneath and you don't have to raise the bed.

I would think a Cummins dealer would be able to give you most of the information you need if you provide the VIN. Even better, they could help you more if you could provide the engine's serial number. Problem is, I don't know where it's located.

Good luck with your travels.

This website pertains to the B5.9 as used in Dodge pickups, but still contains useful information about this durable medium duty diesel engine: Fritz's Dodge Ram Tech

My 2000 5.9 ISB uses 16 quarts in a diesel pusher. The larger oil pan is in the motor homes and the smaller pan is in pickups. If this MH is new to you from a previous owner and you are concerned about any possible lack of recent maintenance, I would add an oil filter, fuel filter and chassis lube to my list. Look at the air filter restriction gauge to see that it is not too restricted. On the chassis lube the drive shaft is the one that is most important in the near term.

All good advise, and before I took off into the wilds I'd drive it around civilization a good bit first. Give it a chance to shake out problems while still in cell range.

Good luck, I don't believe you will find a better engine.
