2000 DutchStar 3862 DSPS Engine quality

I understand the RV my wife and I are contemplating has a Cummins 24V ISB engine. I would really love to hear from those who know more than I (I know ZERO) about these engines about quality and dependability.

I fully get that regular maintenance is essential to that answer. The current owner for all intents appears to be a great guy who takes great care of his things - he even owns a race team and this RV has been used as part of that. So I trust he gets the maintenance thing.

Anyway - I get a little freaked reading about the ISX and wrist pin issues. Nothing like a thrown rod poking a hole through the block.

Please let me know your thoughts...

2000 DSDP will have either a Freightliner chassis with beam axle and CAT 3126 300 hp engine or a Spartan chassis with IFS and Cummins 330 hp ISC.

ISL's had the wrist pin problems, the ISX has intake valve problems.
Neither the 3126 nor ISC have any known major problems. Some ISB's had block cracking problems. DSDP's only cane with the 3126 or ISC, both are good engines.

Welcome to irv2!

Beware of the 5.9L 24 valve Cummins ISB. MANY had defective blocks prone to cracking.

Mine was one of them. I had to replace my engine with only 89K miles at a cost of over $20K.

Search under “Cummins 53 block”.

Good luck!

I learned from the seller it's a Spartan chassis. Thank you for your seemingly unlimited knowledge and willingness to share with strangers. I really started to get freaked and your comments helped greatly.

I now need to find someone local to look her over.

Not to worry, that year DSDP never used an ISB.
I should add: we ordered two DSDP's, a 2000 3865 with the FL chassis and 3126 and a 2002 4090 on Spartan with the 350 ISC so I ended up with a little knowledge of those years.
