2001 Dodge fuel transfer pump

Original pump died at 105,000 miles. Second pump (carter) is only delivering 4 psi at 148,000 miles. This could damage the main injection pump which costs $1600.00. Original pump only delivers 10 psi. I bought an AirDog, Raptor that can supply 100 gal per hr at 20 psi and mounted it on the frame where it is not damaged by engine vibration. I am mentioning this because I had never heard that low fuel flow was a serious problem with the Dodge trucks. FYI

Yep, those of us who owned 2nd generation 24 valve Dodges (1998.5 - 2002 model years) and frequent Dodge/Cummins forums such as Turbodiesel Register learned early on to change lift pumps once the supply pressure to the VP44 injection pump fell below 8 psig at full throttle. Since the VP44 uses excess fuel flow to cool and lubricate the pump, low fuel pressure (and resultant low fuel flow) is a death sentence to the VP44.

Added a liquid filled 0-30 psi guage to moniter the pressure while driving today. Set the press regulator on the new pump to 20 psi. Have to make this truck last a long time.

Add to that a plugged or severely restricted fuel filter will produce the same ugly result on the VP44.
