2015 Cummins Power Club rally

Cummins Power Club Rally

The three day rally included tours of the new engine plant that will produce a Cummins v8 diesel for the new Nissan Titan truck, the large engine plant, and the tech center. One day was devoted to seminars on fleet guard filtration, Onan generators, Cummins engines, and the Allison transmission. The food and facilities were excellent. Thought I would pass along some things conveyed at the seminar:

1. The number one failure of generators (both gas and diesel) is a lack of use. Generators should be exercised (meaning under a minimum 50% load) for two hours per month. Full load is recommended.
2. Make sure to change the generator (diesel) coolant every two years with a 50/50 mixture of propylene glycol and distilled water.
3. On diesels, the water pump belt should be changed every 750 hours or 5-7 years.
4. Cummins sold almost a million engines worldwide last year. Of those about 10,000 were used in the rv business.
5. There are three levels of Cummins facilities in the US now - coach care (40 locations), distributor locations (200 locations), and dealer locations (3500 locations). The most experienced would be the distributor locations which can also be a coach care location. You know if you are at a distributor location if the first word in the name is Cummins, south as Cummins Southeast, Cummins bridgeway, etc.
6. If you are going to store the coach for 6 months or longer change the oil and filters, fill the fuel tank (no biodiesel), exercise monthly unless it's a mechanical engine, tighten the DEF fill cap, and check the coolant freeze protection.
7. Cummins does not recommend the use of diesel fuel additives.
8. Allison transmission fluid should be changed every four years. Synthetic fluid should be used to prevent damage to the internal electrical probes in the transmission.
9. The national sales manager for generators is Karl Wilson. The engine guy is Chris Crowel.
10. Cummins has a new app that can tell you a lot about your particular engine. Download the app, enter your engine serial number, and everything about your engine is revealed. The address is quickserve.cummins.com.
