A friend of mine has a 2002 Monaco Cayman 34' diesel pusher. While climbing a hill, the engine will hiccup/jerk. Other times the warning light will come on and the engine will go to an idle with no power. He has replaced the pick up pump (primary fuel pump) at a cost of $1185.00 but this did not rectify the problem. He has also replaced the fuel/air filters.
Is there anybody else who has had similar problems with some possible solutions? Please advise me and I will forward on to him.
Thanks, Knightly

He has the same engine as I have in my pickup. The lift pump is $185.00 over the counter. The symptoms you describe are common to loosing the fuel injection pump. Cost me $1100 dollars to buy a new one, my son installed it.
Motorhomes are more expensive in labor, so I can't relate to that part.

I had the same symptons in my 275. 1st check your fuel filters. The engine code read lift and injector pumps. Replaced both and no more hiccups. Since that I use a fuel additive to aid in pump lubrication. That was 100,000 miles ago.

Dirttracker, The VP-44 Bosh injector pumps go South if the fuel pressure drops below 5psi. The fuel not only lubes the pump it also cools the pump electronics. This information posted on another group page in June of 09
Link.

This little add on saved my injector pump this Feb. New filters and lift pump and it still running smooth.
Well worth the time and price. It will work on all the injector stile engines.

Hope this post saves others the cost of an injector pump or at-least extends its life.

RE: warning light and engine going to idle - I had a similar problem with my new (to me) 1999 Diplomat. Not necessarily on hills, but when I hit a nasty bump the warning light came on, tranny to neutral, and engine went to idle. I had to stop, go into park, shut the engine down, and restart to get going again. After many hours of looking and adjusting, etc., as a last resort the mechanic removed and cleaned the chassis battery cable connections at the battery. That fixed it! Apparently, the battery connections were just bad enought that when I hit a bump there was enough momentary loss or reduction of voltage to the transmission module that the tranny went to a fault, went into neutral, and sent the engine to idle.

I'm just guessing but I would say the Monaco has a Cummins 5.9. The prices mentioned are about what I paid for my 5.9. Just guessing though since engine size is not mentioned.

Airtool is correct. That is a well known fault in the ISB Cummins engine. Check your fuel pressure. It should be above 15 psi at idle. Now pinch the fuel return line... does pressure go up at Idle? if yes, replace filters and relief valve. If no, replace lift pump and pray you got it in time. If you didn't, you will also need to rebuild the injection pump.

My '99 Discovery has the 5.9 ISB 275 HP. In the shop now for CEL, no power, (derated) low fuel pressure. I'm just hoping the IP is OK.
