My folks have a 2004 bounder with the 5.9 cummins. with just over 34k miles
last week on their return trip through Ok the cruise was set at 65 ish and dear old dad never kicked it off when climbing the long grades on I-35 heading south from north OK

so he kept cruise on and climbed the hills and the engine temp went to the red and so did a few alarms, but cruise never kicked off, the coach just kept trying to keep up, no downshift either, which found as odd.

this event happened twice.
I haven't had a chance to see if anything is damaged...but was curious as to why cruise didn't kick off and the tranny downshift and the ecm cut power to save the engine
the engine did cool down afterwards and by his accounts the coach ran fine afterwards

either way i have to re-educate dear old dad that the bounder is not a passenger car

Thinking that if the ECM did not set the Diesel to the limited power mode it did not sense any major problem. The gauges are more for reference.
I use VSMpc software on my computer when traveling and the sensor readings on the screen do not track the gauges.
Look over everything and get a print out of the ECM information.Thinking it will give you piece of mind and if there is an issue it will show up in the print out.

Dick.

The CAC probably needs a good cleaning if it never has been done.
Has a slobber tube been extended on it?

When bells go off and heat gauge is in the red its time for dad to manual downshift and get the engine up to around 2100 RPM to cool things down.

If it happens once you would think the driver would be watching gauges before it happen the second time.

Cleaning the CAC is a good thought, slobber tube (Oil vent tube) extension also if it has not been done.
I kind of know the feeling of dear in the headlights. Went west a number of years ago with some fishing friends and let one of them drive for a time so I could take a needed brake. He had drive 18 wheelers so the equipment operation was not a problem. A short overview and off we went. Kind of dosed off and when I peaked out the window things where going by faster then normal. How is it going first question. Answer, boy this thing will fly!!
OK !! that is way it has cruise.
THE log file was interesting reading when it was time to take a brake and change drivers again.
He had pushed it allot harder then its ever been before or sense.
Thank God for new tires!!!!!!
It still runs good and that is the story.
