When I do mine, I pull the filter, take a damp rag, wipe out the canister, then take a dry rag and dry it out, making sure nothing has gotten into the intake tube! Also make sure the water drain rubber boot on the bottom of the canister is clean and free of debris.
My opinion of the K&N style air filter, May be good for a drag car, but in my case, did not do what it claimed and was not worth the extra money it cost!

No opinion about the K&N, but that's precisely how it should be done. Sorry to hear about your experience at Speedco. If I ever go there, I will pay special attention to that.
