Started to leave this AM for our planned trip to Tenn and NC. Had the MH out of the shed and loaded. Was hooking up the toad and happened to walk by the shed and saw a broken fan belt on the floor where the MH sits. Checked it and danged if it didn't have Cummins printed on it. Figured it was something my SIL had left there (actually HOPED) Checked the coach and sure enough the belt was gone from the alternator/fan/etc.
There was a "ball" of charred rubber on the ground beside the belt. It appears that something seized and the belt continued turning until it broke. Now we are stuck here. Have to wait until Cummins or Freighliner or someone from Damon tells us what to do about the repair. Simply replacing the belt won't do if there is a component seizure - will just burn another one up. I suspect they will have to haul it to a repair facility but who knows!!
Now we have to unload all the food and stuff until the fix is completed. Good Grief!!

Is this an X-C chassis? year? Do you know for sure that it operates the fan? It's more common for a failure to occur on a/c unit from not running occasionally for long period of time and bearings seizing but in most cases that is not same belt as fan and thus one can drive it without damage.

Honestly I don't know. The coach is an 08 so I figure the chassis is at least an 07. I crawled under there to see if there was a missing belt when I found it lying in the floor, and didn't see one on the fan or the alternator. I will go back this PM as soon as the rain stops and take another look. Will also try to find a serial number/info plate on the engine as well as the chassis.
I do know that usually when you start the engine there is a loud rushing noise. (My daughter says is sounds like a jet) I don't hear that when it starts.
It would be so good if I could drive it to a repair shop, i.e. Gaffney
Will be back in touch

Ok, I usually don't look at posters profiles because they are usually blank but yours is good. I went to Damon and found your chassis is an XC raised rail and Cummins ISL425. On the belt you found that says Cummins can you see a part number like 3289279 or some other. Please let me know what the number is.
BTW- I withdraw my suggestion on ac as it should have dawned on me that it wouldn't be when you said the belt was labeled Cummins. Cummins doesn't supply accessories like ac so no belt for it. It waould have been an FCCC belt.

I believe it is the alternator!!! Locked up and will not move. Still a chunk of the burned rubber stuck to it. Idler pully turns and the fan turns.
Numbers on the belt -3972377
then a 'E-10' and a '307'
It is indeed an XC raised rail chassis. The literature we have says the alternator is a 'Leece Neville' 170 amp, 12 volt. With Damon making note of this, I wonder if Damon put that on or if Cummins supplied it.
It might be easier to have someone like Cummins South send a repair guy out with a new alternator and belt than to have it hauled. What do you think? Does it need to go to the shop anyway to check other components out as well?

Hi Doc
Just my 2cents, If it was mine I would want a service guy to come out and fix it. Any time you toe one you stand a chance of front Fiberglass damage and it will be very close to the boom that reaches the axle. Then the drive shaft will have to be taken out also.
There is going to be a Meet & Eat Rally at Meadows of Dan Va. The last weekend in May check the listing and come on other there.

The alternator would have been supplied by FCCC. They show either 160 or 200 amp on the XC spec sheet. If replaced make sure they put the 200 on if its available i.e its all ways best to go max and they often do it under warranty without added cost. I think you have a FCCC service number to call; they may farm it out to Cummins if you ask. You may be able to talk them into just coming out to replace. Some times they don't like to do so because then they can get hit with two service charges if your diagnosis is wrong.

Well a tow truck showed up this AM and hooked her up to go to the Freightliner shop for the repair. This guy is good! Used an extendible stinger to lift the front tires. When leaving the driveway he was able to lift and lower the front of the coach to avoid dragging the rear end. Dropped the drive shaft, did something to the brakes, removed the rear flap and did something to keep the brakes from locking up.
Was super careful easing into the road - I held traffic as he pulled out. Got it on flat ground, did a walkaround and was off. Hope to get it back this evening sometime.
Brother Leo you are very good and a great asset for this site. Thanks again!

Hi Doc,
Glad you got a good Toe Truck Driver, there is not many that would be real careful. For that many
$$$$ I would want it handled like a Baby.

Hi Doc,
Hope everything comes out ok for you. It better to happen now than when on the road. Hope to see you and Carol at Meadows of Dan.
