At what RPM should I idle my engine
I have a 2015 Dutch Star Diesel Pusher with the 450 engine.
I remember hearing old school to just idle a Diesel engine when fueling, stopping at rest area, anytime you are stopped for a short period of time.
Now with environmental stuff on the engines when should I idle and when should I just shut down
Thanks

Best info would be in your Cummins owners manual.
JMHO; In a rest area , I'll only shut down after a suitable cool down ( depending on speed and terrain) if stopping for a lunch break 15+ minutes .
Fuel stops, I'll use the truck lanes and don't i pull to the pumps until the coach has idled down to cool the turbo; again time length depends on speed ; and I shut down to fuel.
Cool down of the turbo , if the coach has been driven at city speeds , for 10 minutes , I consider that enough cool down time. Pulling directly off the highway, three minutes at idle.
EDIT: If idling longer than 2 minutes, from cold start , I pick the RPM up to 800.

In my Ram Truck I have the 6.7L IL-6 Cummins Turbo Diesel. If I have been driving on the freeway or on city streets. I idle down for 5min. If there was a pyrometer gauge I would wait until it was less than 900 degree. I always have let the engine idle cool down for 5 minutes after I have parked the rig.

If my feeble old mind remembers correctly:
Newer engines equipped with DPF, with or with out DEF, should, not be idled for more then 10 minutes at a time. Extended ideling tends to clog the filter at a faster rate than normal driving.
I never idle when fueling nor do I idle when setting up or tearing down at a camp site. Once the coach is aired up I'm ready to go. In every campground I have been to by the time I get an interstate or highway the engine is sufficiently warmed up to travel at highway speeds.
