By-pass oil filter

Anyone have and or use a by-pass oil filter system on their cummins motors? Any pro's and con's?

Bypass filters are duals, right? The full flow filter filters all of the oil that flows. The by pass filter filters a portion of the oil each time through, but though a much tighter filter so it captures smaller particles than the full flow filter. That way you get better filtration than with a single filter set up. It can be a real job to retrofit a dual filter setup, but it will do a better job. Do you need to do a better job than the manufacturer recommends? I know of people who run duals on their hopped up diesels, but not on stock set ups.

I run Fleet guard filters and am happy with the reports on my oil samples. I see no benefit or need to changing.

I figure Cummins knows what they're doing with filters.

According to fleetguard, their latest combo filters have a full flow section and a by-pass section.

I am going to see if they have one for my application. Did you go look at the videos on You Tube? They also have a new fuel filter/water separator.

I run a by-pass on my 06 Ford PSD and change that filter on the third oil change. The stock Ford filter filters down to 20 microns and the Amsoil by-pass filters down to 2 microns plus I run Amsoil 5w40. It takes 15 to 18mins to filter all the oil in the system, I think it is worth the cost.
I'm thinking of install the same system on my Cat C-9

I think what they are referring to is the ability to by-pass oil around the filter if the filter gets clogged rather than letting a clogged filter stop oil flow. Most Fleet guard filters have this feature.

Are you running oil samples on your unit? That is the only way to know if your filter is doing it's job.

Yes, I send in all my samples to Peterson Cat. I am a retired heavy construction service oiler and have sent oil samples in for over 35 years and they have all been sent to Halton Cat now owned by Peterson Cat. I get the sample bottle, hose and mailer for $13.25 and paper report in about 4 days and an email in about 2 to 3 days.
My PSD has the same type of oil fired injectors as my Cat C-9 so my oil gets changed once a year or 5000mi, you pay to play.

I run a Frantz "toilet paper" bypass filter on my old 96 5.9B motor and upped my oil changes from 6,000 to 18,000 miles per change.
Yes, I do oil analysis and Blackstone keeps saying NO problems and go 2000 more miles on the next change.
I do add ZDDplus and that helps keep the wear down. I use whatever diesel 15-40wt oil that is on sale at the time. I do change the "toilet paper" filter every 2500 miles and add a Qt. of oil.

I think you are on the right track running a synthetic oil. I have seen several people having problems with their oil fired injectors.
I still see no need to add extra filters as my reports are good.
Yes I am going to see if they make the new Fleet guard filter that will fit my coach I definitely like the new water separator filter.
As a disclaimer, I use to run an oil lab when I was in the AF. I kind of know what I am looking at when I see a report.

Next time you run your oil sample have a particle count done. It's usually the super deluxe test. If you don't have large particle in your sample then the current filter is doing it's job.

if you are using the Fleetguard LF9009, you already have bypass filtration built into that full flow filter. It is called a Venturi Combo on the shell. this means rhst the full flow is split into two individualflow rates withe a slow flow through the bypass section of stacked disks which filter particle as small as sub micronic the hugher flow full flow is Stratapore synthetic media.

this website hs videos which saves me a lot of typing.

Computerno oil pump flow is lost from the lubrication circuit as you woid from a separate bypass filter.
