I just installed a remote engine oil bypass filter system on the 450hp M11 Cummins in our 98 Signature. I pieced the system together myself.

I used a CarQuest#89750 remote bypass filter mount(equivalent to a Wix 24750). The oil source is from a tee fitting that I installed at the oil pressure sender. The oil returns at a fitting I installed in one of the un-used oil pan pipe plugs. The return restriction size is .100" , and I used 1/4" id rubber hyd hose w/various brass fittings to plum the remote bypass filter mount. The bypass filter I'm using is a Baldwin B7577(equivalent to Wix 51749 or FG LF777). Total bypass system cost was less than $100.

This will keep the engine oil much cleaner between changes and allow me to extend oil changes if I so desire.

Nice pictures, and a nice neat install job!

A question from a diesel engine neophyte: what is the advantage to this system, and why would one want in on their engine?

Diesels produce a lot of soot. The normal full flow filter on diesels will filter out particles down to about 35 microns. A bypass filter system takes about 10% of the oil pumps volume and filters it down to about 5 microns. Of course over time all the oil eventually passes thru the bypass and is cleaned up

This will keep the engine oil much cleaner between changes and allow for extended oil changes if so desired.

The Baldwin filter used has a 12 micron rating.

In our diesel MHs we use Shell Rotella T3 15-40w dinosaur oil. I will probably change to a synthetic in the future and start doing extended oil changes.

In our gasoline daily drivers we use Amsoil SSO 0-30w synthetic and do extended oil changes. I've installed a TopDog V @ ParetoPoint.com on each.

There a great forum called BOB IS THE OIL GUY that is full of great info.

We hope this helps

Thanks for the explanation, it makes sense. When I heard bypass, I was thinking that it was some sort of bypass that let unfiltered oil past the filter, which had me concerned.

Has anyone used one of the FS2500 bypass filters?

Thanks

I am installing an AMSOIL bypass filter in my 1996 Foretravel with the Cummins M11. I will replace the quarter inch "T" for the oil pressure sender with a four way "T" as the source of oil.

The most convenient oil return location is a fitting on the top of the head. Does anyone know if returning one gallon per minute to the top of the head will cause problems? At first glance it would appear that the extra oil into the valve train area would be a benefit, however, I worry that perhaps the oil passages between the top of the head and the pan may not be large enough to handle a gallon per minute.

I can assure you the Baldwin replacement for a Fleetguard LF777 is not an accurate replacement. Cut both open to see that the Baldwin is a skinny pleated paper product with little sludge holding ability. The LF777 has a stacked disk pack that way more sludge trapping ability.

We now install the Fleetguard Stratapore filter# LF3542 in the bypass position, and have added a petcock at the bypass filter head so as to easily take oil samples to send off for analysis.

I use an oil analysis lab to allow me to extend my oil changes. Take a sample in the fall and send it in. So far I am on my third year with my oil and every thing looks good. Did the same with the transmission. I only place a few hundred miles a year so I can not see changing 18 quarts of oil annually for those few miles. Just make sure you get the TBN number in your results. Usually has to be ask for and is an extra fee. Even with out trying to extend the oil changes, the lab results allow you to keep track of your engine condition.

How did you arrive at that as a bypass filter. Bad choice. Just a pleated paper full flow element that crosses to a Hino engine lube filter. Get the LF777 and appropriate remote mount filter head. The head has the restricting orifice that prevents high flow thus not robbing the oil pump of needed volume for lubrication. The LF777 will have a maximum flow of 2 GPM. Plumb it in BEFORE the standard engine lube filter. If your engine is an ISC or ISL, the standard lube filter is a venturi combination with full flow and bypass in one filter housing. An additional bypass filter does nothing to increase oil cleanliness on this engine.
