Care and feeding of CAPS

I found out while doing some research yesterday, that Cummins QuickService has my ISL370 Engine down as a CM554 model which under the service section reflects it is a CAPS fuel system. (CM850 reflects Common Rail.).

As we purchased our coach, our 2004 coach, I asked the dealer to validate if the rigs ISL was CAPS vs Common Rail. They updated me it was Common Rail. Mine was built July 2003, after the suppose cut over to Common Rail - figure that is what the Dealer maint department based the Common Rail statement vs CAPS. Holland Motors of San Diego were fair and honest to work with on this purchase, I suspect the tech made an honest mistake/assumption.

I had asked, due to my reading of so many posts of ISC/ISL CAPS problems, I had wanted to avoid these. I 'may' have kept looking if I had known it was a CAPS - or maybe not, as the rig had so many of the items that were important to us. But it would have been a factor in my dealing.

My bad, as I should have called Cummins with the Engine Serial mysef, and I did not...

I run with OptiLube in each tank. Run Amsoil Cetaine too, especially when I know I'm hitting mountain driving with the tank of fuel. What other care and feeding tips do some of you follow to help the CAPS along?

I did read a thread that some late ISL CAPS had no inline fuel filter between the tank and the fuel pump, using the fuel pump filter/screen only. I don't know if that is the case with mine, and will look and add a fuel filter if missing.

I commented on the CC Yahoo board, that after 2 1/2 years with this coach, it was a surprise that what I thought I knew, I did not...

Appreciate any care and feeding tips to help maintain the CAPS.

Best to all, be safe, have fun,
Smitty

read this message, and check for 2 fuel filters one should be the primary ( water separator) and a secondary ( lower micron)
Helpful Cummins ISC Information

Better get a better info source than that website. They call for an LF9009 as fuel filter for the HPCR engine. Cummins does not specify an engine lube oil filter to be used as a fuel filter.

Don't mess with third party experts, ask your Cummins distributor what the spec fuel filter and fuel water separator filters are supposed to be. In some cases, only the fuel filter will come installed on the engine from the Rocky Mount Engine Plant. The FWS often times is supplied by the chassis manufacturer using Cummins specifications for performance.

Thanks for the input guys, I was just caught flat footed when I found it to be CAPS configuration.

I do have, and maintain the two proper fuel filters on this unit. I found the older post that talked about some chassis only having one fuel filter and then depending on the inline screen to help out at the end of the line... Not my situation, so not a factor. (And Gary, as with so many people you've helped on filters in general - you convinced me to stay with the oil and fuel filters that came on the rig. So gee, they must be right!)

I've become a bit more 'surf-ecated' on CAPS in general, and will just need to factor this if problems pop up down the road. The rig has a very young 23K miles on it, and has always been properly maintained. Since I bought it with just shy of 13K on it, we've run the mentioned additives in the fuel. So extra lube and cleaning along the last 10K miles. Looks like that's about all I can do for reasonable preventative care and feeding. (Of course, normal filters maintenance, and I do try to fuel at stations with good volume of usage to get fresh fuel.)

Probably a few hundred thousand or million CAPS ISB/ISC/ISL's (Don't know about ISM's or M11's) down the road as I type, so the system does work!

I'll hope to not do a Terminator, and come back with questions down the road about:

'My CAPS (add component here) is out, do aftermarket or upgrades exist that would be smart to do now?'

It ain't a problem now, so I'll just keep on cruzin until one may pop up!

Best to all, be safe, have fun,
Smitty
