Well, it is recommended to change at least once per year or 20,000 miles. If it were me, I would have no problem going another 3000 mi after one year with only 3000 mi on the oil.

I also put low miles on my ISB 5.9L and have been changing it every 2 years for the last 12-14 years.

Betting It will still outlast me.

IF you have a warrantee (factory or aftermarket) read the policy. My aftermarket (GS ESP) would not cover if mfgr recommended maintenance is not performed (and documented w receipts).

I'd change it and have it tested. Once you've done this a couple of times you'll know how your engine is doing and can then have confidence into extending oil changes if you don't drive a lot of miles in a 12 month period.

I'm in the change it by XXX number of miles or one year, whichever is first group. I can change the oil myself for ~$75 which is cheap peace of mind when you consider the cost of one of these engines.

I am in the oil analysis crowd. I send in a sample to a Lab and follow their instructions.

In my case I have about 15,000 miles and 4 years on the oil in my engine.

Analysis comes back ok so I continue.

Does the cost of oil analysis vs oil change at $75/5 gal justify waiting another year. I figure if I can't afford an oil change I shouldn't be driving a diesel.

Well, I would agree as you stated it. But, you are missing an important point. Analysis can reveal a catastrophic problem in the motor you will never
see until it is too late. If I can't afford a test to protect my $30,000 motor, I shouldn't be driving a diesel either [emoji4]

Agree 100%
It's not about saving an oil change. It is monitoring health of complete engine.

For less than $100 a year, you can buy the 3 pack for analysis and check the engine, transmission, and generator oil all at one time. Done yearly gives me peace of mind concerning condition of all three systems. Any surprises can be handled as they arise rather than unknowingly allowing them to continue and get worse over time. Just my thoughts. :-)
