I know the manual says 15K miles or 1 year for oil changes for my Itasca DP. Is this what most folks are doing even if in the year they've only driven 2-3000 miles? Also same question for the lubing of the chassis, I believe it also is on a yearly schedule.

I do my oil every year or at around 15,000. I also lube my chassie at that time. I lube my drive shaft every 3000 miles or 6 months. Hope this helps.

Same as ArmyEOD. Change the oil on time or miles, whichever first. Understand some do oil analysis to extend interval ?. Also I change the Fuel-filter at each oil change. I also lube the U-joints quite often, pump grease until it comes out all four yoke seals.enjoy...

One year or 15,000 miles on the oil and filter. Chassis lube every 5,000 which includes the driveline. Fuel filters at every oil change. SCA/DCA check at the oil change interval and adjustments made accordingly.

The driveline on a DP takes some real punishment so I pay close attention to proper lube here.

I don't worry about oil analysis, a waste of $$$

Yes, it's required to keep your warranty in effect. Plus it's what is recommended so I do it. That's the reason for the mileage/time requirement, just like on your car. Oil accumulates water and other contaminates and storing with old oil can allow acids to form in the crankcase.
Change the oil BEFORE you store it for the season as per the recommendations for that reason also.

As I recall, the oil capacity is approx 15qt. Allowing for some loss/gain with engine mounting angle and how long you drain it. I would refill counting the filter to 12qt and check the dipstick. From the low mark to the full is approx 2qt.

In the shop I work in that is one question you don't ask. The standard answer you will get is "till its full!"

My (Diplomat) Cummins engine manual calls for 12 quarts of oil with filter change, and that is what the 5.9 in my Dodge truck takes.

My 2000 ISB 5.9, uses 17 Qts with filter and my filter is Fleetguard LF3970. Don't trust this, call or e-mail Cummins with your serial number and they can tell you.

Its really a bad thing to over fill.

ISB 5.9 in a motorhome and a pickup truck can be two completely different beast. Most motorhomes have a much larger oil pan.

I have attached the pertinent page from the ISB owners manual maintenance recommendations for service intervals. With only 3000 miles per year you should run your engine weekly to as it will help with issues of any possible water vapor entrapment in the lube oil. You could go longer than yearly with your situation but certainly not 5 years to accumulate 15K miles. I would do it every other year. There are stand-by electric generators that get low run time and do not have yearly oil changes.

Cummins says that if you can't drive the rig long enough to warm the engine up (30 miles or so) to not bother starting it.
Oil should be changed just before storing the unit. This gets rid of contaminates and water before it does any damage.
You go by both the mileage and time limits given, whichever comes first is what you go by. Most RV'ers don't drive enough and end up changing oil every year.
