Check Engine Light

My 2014 Tiffin Phaeton 40 QBH has a Cummins ISL 380hp. The coach has been in storage since October, and we got a sunny dry weekend, so I decided to take the rig out for a short ride. Did the Pre-trip and all fluid levels were within specifications. About 10 minutes into the ride, the check engine light came on.

I don’t have a code reader, but wonder if the rig sat too long, or if the fuel started to go bad. Temperatures here are in the 20’s to 40’s. I stopped at pilot, poured in some fuel treatment for octane boost and anti-gel, then topped off the tank. Everything continues to run well, but the light stayed on after the fill-up.

Any ideas or similar experiences out there? If the issue goes away, will the check engine light reset itself? I realize a trip to Cummins is probably in my future, but I always like to get your input before I open my wallet to the service businesses.

Hi Blackcabby; I have the 8.3 ISC in my 01 Windsor. Your ISL is newer, but when you get the check engine light there are just too many guesses to try to know what is wrong. You say all fluids are up to where they should be and that is a great place to start. It could be a loose connection or a sensor that has failed. What I always do first is to throw the chassis battery disconnect to off and wait about 5 min. Turn the power back on and see if it is still there. If it is you are going to need the code read. Sorry. At this moment I cannot think of anything else to tell you. Try the disconnect trick and let us know what happened. Good luck!

Even though your antifreeze level seems fine put some in and see what happens.

You can toggle through and pull up the code, call Cummins and they will tell you what the code is

Also search the code and usually find it as well

Double check the coolant level and if not 1/2 or closer to the cold full mark, add more

Well, we finally broke winterization and took the coach to Cummins for annual servicing. The CEL was caused by a loose OBD connection. Nothing to repair
