Check Engine Light Cummins 300 ISC

I created this account on behalf of my dad, he has a 2011 Freightliner Class 2 truck with a Cummins 300 HP ISC engine. The check engine light stays on all the time, and the engine shut down while driving down the road. I've looked everywhere, and short of having it hooked up to a machine I thought I would turn to the internet. I know this is an RV site - but you're the most relevant forum that came up in my keyword search. I don't know all of the specs, but would it be safe to say this is likely a fuel injection issue?
Thank you -

No it would not be safe to say anything without retrieving the diagnostic codes from the ECM. The check engine light alerts the driver to an engine problem that can lead to engine failure.(can you visualize a $30,000 engine replacement?) The light may be for one or more of a hundred issues.

Without retrieving the codes from the ECM you are guessing and spending money needlessly.
I've never tried, but it may be possible to rent a code reader and J cable for diesel engines for a few hrs. I think Auto-zone loans tools for free.

Most times, a check engine light will come on for anything emission system related that is not functioning properly. Just because the check engine light (or "idiot light" as I like to call it) is on, doesn't necessarily mean that your engine is going to blow up. The important thing is to get a code reader, pull the code, and verify what the code means. No need to panic.
