Coolant change or not?

On my new to me 2000 SIG I checked the non long life coolant with my strips and it tests good. Should I still change it? It looks clean.

I have new filters but have yet to buy the coolant. The coach has 92k.

Are you certain the previous owner did not change the coolant? You could always go to an Oasis (Freightliner/RV) service center and get their advise. What is the service interval for this in the maintenance guide?

Since you have no history and have no way of knowing the age of the coolant, I would at least pull a sample and have it tested. The other choice would be to drain it and flush with tap water a couple of times then refill with Fleetguard ES Complete EG. That would be the most robust equal to what you have now.

Thx guys, The last coolant change record I have from the po service records is 3 years ago.

My Cummins book says annual change. But that seems excessive for the less thank 10k miles we do a year.

If i move to compleat what interval should use going forward? Would I still use the wf2075 filter?

Even though the cost of coolant has increased dramatically, I think I would and get it over....benefits out weigh the cost IMHO.

If you don't flush, will you be able to get your mind off of it?? I wouldn't.

Understood. The costs aren't the issue. I just wanted to understand what you guys thought as I'm a newbie to big diesel maintenance and trying to get up to speed.

I'll flush in the next couple weeks and move to compleat.

Maintenance is a HUGE topic on the forum. Some say "follow the manufactures requirements" to the mile/date, others say "use your own judgment and the guide as a 'guide'". I fall in the latter group.

In my opinion and experience some of the maintenance requirements are extreme. Your case I feel is one of those instances. On the other hand, chassis greasing is not. But, in defense of the manufacturer, warranty guidelines need to be established.

I believe in testing. I use Blackstone Labs but there are many other test facilities to be had. Trucking fleets us testing as a method to reduce cost and environment contamination.

Do what you feel you must.

Many happy trails,
Rick Y

3 years is certainly not excessive if the DCA level has been maintained and the coolant has not been subjected to overheating and still looks clear. I let mine get away from me & went over 5 years. I had it tested before changing and discovered that it had gotten too concentrated over its service life. I did several top ups with straight coolant. An unexpected result of the coolant change has been a reduction in my transmission temps of 5-10 degrees. This is due to the transmission cooler which is in the radiator. The 50/50 coolant dilution has a better heat transfer. With advise from Gary S, I flushed and changed to the Fleetguard ES Compleat EG that I recommended.

You will still use the filter as before. I use the one with 4 units of DCA.

Since you plan to drain, flush and refill you might also consider using ES Compleat OAT (organic acid technology) extended life coolant. Final Charge is another brand of OAT. OAT will give you very long life with no need to check SCA/DCA, you just add an extender at about 3 years. Your coolant filter will be replaced with a simple water filter element that has no additives.

My 2007 had ES Compleat PG and was recently replaced with ES OAT.

Steve,

Is this what you are talking about?

http://www.ryderfleetproducts.com/fl...n-p-v52-cc2835

I have read some on oat but isnt it harder to get on the road and a lot more $$?

What are the interval differences between es and oat?

Final Charge is pretty easy to find at most any of the truck stops and some Walmarts have it.

I was told OAT is good for about 600,000 miles in an OTR truck with the extender added at 300,000 miles. Since most of us with RV's will never see that kind of mileage I am not sure how that translates to a time interval. My Cummins dealer said 6 years at least in my coach.

Gary (Spike45) is the expert on this subject so maybe he will chime in with his recommendations.

Watch what you add to the Cooling System, The Wrong ADDITIVE can destroy certain Liner Seals, check with the Engine MFG 1st!

There are many discussions on many different forums about the topic. Each engine manufacture has their own concerns. I recommend that you use the best product recommended but the maker of your ENGINE. Testing it annually will keep you aware of the condition of your cooling system, including pending failures.

I just received my es compleat order. Is this the right coolant to use if I don't want to go to oat right now?
