Coolant shutoff

Getting ready to do the yearly maintenance on my 2002 DSDP. I was told that there is a coolant shutoff that would prevent you from getting a "bath" when you change the coolant filter. I have yet to find it...help!

Normally, there is a small blade knob right on the filter mounting above the filter that can be turned 90 degrees to shut-off the coolant for filter replacement.....

Yes, that's the norm. If in fact you have a coolant filter. Not all engines have it.

The OEM plastic valves are known to break when used. The PO of my coach had the two originals replaced with metal valves with a metal knob.

Something to keep in mind when changing this filter. Besides being a filter, there are different part numbers for filters that contain varying amounts of SCA additive charge depending on what your coolant analysis recommends.
If you are using Extended Life Coolant or OAT coolant the standard filter Without SCA is P/N WF2077 (Fleetgard)

Yeah, mine (ISL engine) is way, way up there where the coolant "filter" can screws in. Pretty much impossible to reach without some special (and long) tool. I long ago decided that somebody else can change that one!

It's not a filter - it is a slow-release chemical pack that puts additional coolant chemicals into the system.

Nope--it kind of is a filter--you can buy "filters" with varying levels of DCS chemical: from 0-level of DCA to like 3 or 6 units of DCA. Be kind of dumb to offer a "chemical dispenser" with "0" chemicals?????

On the ISC, there are two levers on that cut off switch. One can be accessed with the oil filter on the engine, the other is between the oil and coolant filter. The one between the filters is more robust and harder to break. I now change the coolant and oil filter at the same time so I can use that lever.

My engine has OAT coolant in the system and I use the coolant filter doesn't contain SCAs.

It's for use when you add your own SCA/DCA chemicals.

On our '02 DSDP ISC 350 it was, in fact, a filter. You can buy them with varying amounts of DCA or totally without depending on the need for SCA's in your coolant.
On the ISL they did eliminate the filter for some reason.

Humm, when I changed my coolant filter I never knew about any shutoff valve, just changed the filter without spilling over a few oz.
That might be because I have a side-radiator, everything is below the level of the filter.

My ISM has a gate valve on both sides of the filter. I use one of them to fill up a bottle to test the coolant, while changing the filter. There is little to no mess involved. You can see one of them in this photo that I took of my ME-BMK installation. The other is a duplicate on the other side.
