The 2008 Essex comes with a Cummins 500 ISM engine. I notice it does not have the particulate "After Burner" that many 2008 coaches require to meet the 2007 emission standards. Does this Cummins engine meet the 2007 emission standards or does Cummins have some kind of credits that allow them to continue to sell this engine for an extended period of time? I am concerned about buying a Motorhome that does not meet the current emission standards. Thanks for any comments.

Gene & Kaye,
Worry not about the new emmissions standards. If you purchase a coach with the old style engine, consider yourself fortunate.
1. There is less to maintain.
2. The older engine is more tollerent of fuel changes.
3. Your travels to Canada and Mexico can be done without worring about fuel.
4. The list goes on.
There is confusion about when the new engines are hitting the coach manufacturer's production line. This all depends on how many chassis the coach manufacturer stocked up on before the engine manufacturer stopped manufacturing them. I have no problem with purchasing a new coach with the old technology engine.

It's my understanding that all 2007 Cummins engines use the particulate filter, and that there are no 2006 engine/chassis for Essex available.
I'll see if I can find out anything at the factory tomorrow.

At the Newmar International in Gillette, one of the seminars was lead by Dale Eddy of Cummins.
He stated the ISM does not have or need the DSF after burner filter. It meets emission standards without it.
This is what he told us in June.

All engines are certified for 2007 and the ISM was certified without the need for the filters. The ISB all ready meets the 2010 standards. The 2007 engine is the same engine as that which came from 2002/2004 engine with exception of some product improvements. So, the only real difference from a completed coach installation is the environmental adders which are external to engine per se.

Interesting,
First, worry NOT about meeting emission standards. You simply can not sell a vehicle for a given model year that does not meet the current emission or vehicle safety standards.
I was under the impression that the last of the LSD and ULSD compatible ISM engines in the K2 was sold by Newmar in January'ish 2007 resulting in a chassis VDM in the March'ish 2007 timeframe. Recall all those posts (from LeesRV as well) counting down the last remaining chassis?
So, I suspect the real question is, does the ISM engine in the newer coaches - either with or without the particulate filter - run on BOTH LSD and ULSD???? If yes that would be great!

The answer is yes BUT legally it requires ULSD as that is how it was certified. I don't suppose it makes much difference as it appears that few places still are selling LSD based upon my present rip across US.

the new engines with the particulate filter will operate on the LSD fuel, but using it will cause the filter to burn off the particles more often and eventually foul the filter. There is a way to force the filter to burn off the particles even after fouling, but requires shop and forced burn. Very many of these forced burns and the filter requires replacement.

Please note earlier comments. The ISM does not have a filter so it can run on LSD without adverse effect if one ignore the legal issue.
