Cummins Dependability
I guess I need to vent a little. First, let me state that I like Cummins engines and have owned a '97 5.9L 12-valve and a '99 5.9L 24-valve. Both of those engines were pretty much trouble free while putting many thousands of miles on them.
Here is my frustration. My current 2008 MH has a 6.7L Cummins - 340HP with a VGT turbo. When we bought it in September 2013, I knew the MH had not been driven much for at least 2 years so I expected some mechanical issues might develop. Sure enough, turbo had to be cleaned and new actuator installed late 2014 and the EGR replaced in 2015 along with replacing the crankshaft position sensor. Now, after only about 4000 miles since that work was done, the MH is once again in the shop needing a new turbo and another crankshaft position sensor. Are the newer engines less dependable or is it just the ones right after the EPA restrictions were imposed on diesels? I'm seriously considering trading in my MH because we have taken 4 major trips in it and have had to find a repair facility on each trip. However, I don't want to trade if the newer engines have the same poor reliability.
Thanks for letting me vent! ------ Jim

Sounds like a shop is throwing parts at the motor. I don't care if it a Cummins shop, they can still get the diagnosis wrong. Might be time to look for a new shop.

I've got you beat! New lift pump, new wiring harness, new electronic control module (ECM), and finally an in-frame overhaul due to dropped cylinder sleeves. About $15,000+ all in the first year. And that doesn't count the repairs to the coach.
Have to admit that it purrs like a kitten now.

TheJanieLynn, you certainly have me beat! I'm sorry to hear about your troubles.
dons2346, these are different shops. One is near our home but the other 3 were shops we had to use while traveling - 2 Peterbuilt shops and the current shop is a Cummins facility. After each shop visit, the engines runs great for awhile but I think these parts should last longer than they have.

Your experience tends to demonstrate that the complexity of modern engines can be detrimental to reliability at times.
One example is a turbo which serves to enhance power by compressing intake air, and it also serves as an exhaust brake to enhance stopping power, all in one.
Older designs separate those two functions with a more simple turbo charger and a more simple exhaust brake, with fewer related sensors and controls.
Whether more complex modern designs overall are more or less reliable than simpler older designs is not clear in the absence of objective statistics.
There are advantages and disadvantages to everything, so we pays our money and takes our choice, and chance.

Just for everyone's information, when I picked up my coach from the Cummins shop, I told the people there that I was seriously considering another MH due to the engine issues I've had with this one. I asked which years of Cummins engines (ISB) they would recommend or years I should avoid. The immediate answer was a recommendation for the pre-2006 units. Next they suggested I avoid the 2006 thru 2009 years.
If I were to look at larger MHs with bigger engines, they suggested the one with the shorter piston stroke. Sorry, but I forgot the engine designation.

My 2009 ISB has been a money pit. VGT actuator, EGR, turbo, particulate filter. I wish I would have kept my 2006 Journey pre emission MH.

Rodz, I have had similar problems - VGT actuator, EGR, turbo, and crankshaft position sensor. No issue with the particulate filter so far.

Avoid 06-09 Cat Conv and DPFs Cummins. After 2010 systems have reduced problems. Glad I waited until 2014 for my ISL. So far so good.
I'm sure many are not having problems.
