Cummins ISC Starter Stuck Engaged

I went to start my 2005 Cummins ISC, but the battery was dead. I applied the power boost with the generator running and it was turning over slow, but nearly started. When I released the key the starter kept turning. Within a few seconds the generator quit. I then tried jumper cables from my truck to the chassis batteries, the starter turns as soon as jumper cables are connected. I have 2 questions:

1 - What is causing the ISC starter to stay engaged?
2 - The generator won't pre-heat or turn over. What could have tripped to cause this?

Thank you in advance for any constructive advice you might be able to offer.

You need to give the starter soleniod and the relay a rap with a hammer.

Low volts equal high amps and the contacts can spot weld together. A rap will get them apart.

If it still tries to crank rap it again.

Then don't try starting again until you charge the batteries full.

The generator is probably trying to start from your now dead batteries.
