WOULD LIKE TO HEAR FROM FELLOW COACH OWNERS WHO HAVE HAD PREMATURE FAILURE WITH FUEL PUMPS.WE HAD ARATHER BAD EXPERINCE IN EL PASO,TX LAST OCT.AT AN AUTHORIZED CUMMINS FACILITY. MY COACH IS GOING ON 7YRS,BUT HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED,55,000MI.FIRST THE SHOP DIAGNOSTE IT AS THE CAPS FUEL PUMP,THEY PUT ,,IT ON AND STILL HAD SAME PROBLEM,(stoping and stalling)they then replaced presure sensor and several other parts, still had same problem.finilly after five days we called cummins shop for help they finily found bad lift pump and replaced it, day seven.they then wanted us yo pay $8,200.00 but managed to reduce it to $6,400.00 my argument was that the old caps pump was still good. THEY SAID WE WILL PUT IT BACK ON ,AND IF ITS O.K.WE WILL ERASE THAT PART OF BILL, SORT OF LIKE EXTORTION. SO WE PAID UP AND GOT,BUT I AM NOT HAPPY WITH THIS ENCOUNTER, AS I HAD A PROBLEM BACK IN 06 WITH LIFT PUMP, AND IT WAS REPLACED UNDER CUMMINS WARANTEE. EXPLAINED THIS TO CUMMINS HEADQUATORS , AND THEIR ONLY REPLY WAS,SORRY YOU ARE OUT OF WARRANTY !this was a bad experince I WILLNEVER FORGET , AND HOPE NO ELSE WOULD HAVE TO GO THUR THIS NIGHTMARE. MICHEAEL,BOERNE,TX.

My coach is also 7 years old next month and has 57k miles on it. My lift pump and injection pump are still fine (hope this doesn't jinx me!).

Replacing the injector pump is a major expense and I can see why you are upset if they misdiagnosed it and replaced it unnecessarily. Maybe you should have taken them up on the offer to put it back in? Otherwise, you are stuck. You got a new CAPS injector pump, so you have to pay for it.

This could possibly be attributed to the new ULS diesel fuel as it has less lubrication than the LS fuel did. You may want to add a lubricant to the fuel.

That is highway robbery. I own a small business that services complex systems. Part of our warrantee is:
If the part we replace doesn't fix the problem you have, you don't have to pay for it. Period.
Up to us to reinstall the original part or not, but the part becomes free.

It is the responsibility of the technician to properly diagnose the problem and replace only the part that is causing it.

If he has to use a shotgun, they need a new techincian.

Friends brother had the same problems and final fix was a small filter screen in the fuel line that was partial plugged. A lot of parts at different places was thrown at it (he was on a trip) before an old time diesel mechanic (not a tech or parts changer) told the last shop what to look for

Which Cummins engine are you refering too?

The 5.9L ISB?

My Dodge truck is a '98 and has the 5.9L in it. I have replaced the fuel filter a few times, and the lift pump once. The pump cost me less than $200 and I put it on myself.

Actually, according to the fuel industry ULSD has no less lubricating qualities than LSD. They add the lubricant to the fuel.

Ummmm, I don't trust that farther than I can see their words.

I use MMO or whatever happens to be close at hand. 2 cycle oil, etc...

"They" aren't the ones who will have to pay to replace my VP44 injection pump, thank you.

Does an extended warranty pay for this part? Joe

I had an injection pump failure at about 55,000 miles and 10 model years old.

The symptom was difficulty starting the rig and finally about 2/3 of the way into the downhill run from Donner Summit to Truckee the engine died.

Of course, I was not aware at first that I had no engine since the grade and gravity provided plenty of momentum. We coasted to a stop in Truckee. Never to start the engine again.

That bill was about $4,200 and included the replaced Bosch pump, the mechanical lift pump and reattaching the drive shaft after the tow to Cummins West in Reno.

Cummins West supervisor indicated that it was not an unusual failure at any mileage level.

I use Miracle Oil found at Wal Mart for about $13.00/gal. Recommended to me by a lifetime operator of Diesel eqipment and M/H owner.

Fuel and oil additives are mostly snake oil. Marvel Mystery oil ( I think that is what the last poster called Miracle OIl) is a joke. Here is a quote:

"Marvel Mystery oil is 30% varsol (charcoal lighter fluid) and 70% 30wt base oil some red dye and wintergreen fragrance. It is from the late 1920s.

Its a solvent type product. Some people find it beneficial for sticky valves or some sludge dispersal. If you are depending on them for either of these reasons, you have bigger problems.

It evaporates within hours in an engine. I neither provides any corrosion protection or anti-wear benefit. It will not harm anything in the recommended concentration."

This product worked well 50 years ago to unstick lifters but has no place in a modern engine. There have been tests that showed it added no lubricity to ULSD. It is one thing to add something to your fuel to prevent gelling in cold weather but anything else is snake oil.
