Cummins ISX broken valve in #6
I have been reading all the post regarding this problem and thought I would add a current instance. I have a 2008 Holiday Rambler Navigator with a 600hp Cummins ISX engine. On April 10, 2018 while stopped at a red light the engine started running rough and vibrating. Fortunately there was a large parking lot nearby that we could pull into and shut it down.
Called a diesel mechanic out and he read the fault codes fro the ECM. Fault code was SPN 3616 which was Engine VGT Nozzel position out of adjustment in the turbocharger. Mechanic said it was probably stuck in the closed position. Had it towed to Four Star Freightliner in Midway FL for repair.
After removing the turbo and opening it up found internal damage due to pieces of metal being sucked into it. Later found that #6 cylinder was down and had to pull the head. Intake valve was broken about 50% around the valve head. This was the metal pieces that destroyed the turbo.
Even though this engine only had 26,000 miles on it the Cummins warranty had expired. We did however have an extended warranty with Cornerstone. That is another story in itself. After denying our claim not once but twice claiming misuse and abuse on our part and a two week delay they finally agreed to pay about 50% of the $32,00 repair bill. A word to the wise, never buy an extended warranty from Cornerstone.

Sorry to hear that!
This post will make a lot of 600 ISX owners nervous. Most similar cases we have read about (or experienced), were on the 650hp version.

Why should you pay $16K?
Call an attorney ASAP. You will save yourself way more than what the attorney will charge.
I'd like to see Cornerstone prove you abused or misused your coach. What do they base that on?
Ask Cummins (or the repair shop, if not Cummins) is there is any evidence of abuse/misuse.

I second this advice. I had a cornerstone extended warranty on vehicle. The engine went out at 98000 miles. The adjuster was going to deny the claim because we hadn't done the required maintenance. I asked how he knew that and he said the last oil change sticker on the door (remember those?) Was at 50k miles. I asked if he would like to see my log. He said no and recommended the claim be paid. They always try to deny the claim and wait for the owner to "negotiate" a settlement. Don't negotiate over bogus claims.

Which model ISX is it? Do you have the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) CM871 or the EGR CM870?

My engine was built in 2007 and the Monaco materials list it as a 600hp ISX Signature. It is a CM871 with a DPF.

I'm sorry to hear about your engine.
Did they replace the other valves? Or did they just install a complete remanufactured cylinder head?
Did they replace the #6 piston and liner, or do they replace all pistons/liners?
Do you get a warranty with the rebuild?
It seems odd the intake valve failed as they are cooled by each intake charge. Usually, it's the exhaust valve that fails.

Hi Fulltimn2; Sorry to hear about problems with your ISX. You need to put a search in at the top of this page for, #6 cylinder, valve problems in a Cummin's ISX engine. You will read posts by Mr. D in Vancouver Washington. He has a County Coach and it dropped the #6 valve twice. I have not reread his posts lately, so I do not know if you both have the same engine with the mentioned problem. I am sure if you send Mr. D a private message he will be glad to fill you in. From what I understand, Cummin's knows about the problem but does not consider the problem to be a defect. If the warranty company you have finds out about the problems with the ISX, it will problem make it even harder to get them to pay for the repair. You need to get all the info in hand before proceeding with an lawyer. This is just my opinion, but I would see if your engine is in the serial number range that is having this problem. Good luck in your investigation!

The normal Cummins warranty after a rebuild like this is 1 yr or 100,000 miles. Pretty much useless for an RV, especially for us since the the late DW was diagnosed with liver cancer shortly after the rebuild and her health stopped us from using the rig.

Isx valve drop
Ours dropped a valve a week after we bought it as it was being driven home. Long story but Mr.D and i became friends because of it as i found him online as well. Since then met another one of these while rving in kenora ontario this year.
Always the same issue number 6valve drop. I had cummins fix it over 2 months and since they had it apart there was 2 updates for rv engines. One was an updated head with new valves that were made of a different material. The other was a piston upgrade specifically for this engine. They added a carbon scrapper ring to combat the carbon build up in these enginesdue to them being over powered and not working hard enough. We also did the turbo and all the bottom end bearings and rods. Full on rebuild.
Cummins knows about the issue and the shop in thinder bay fought on my behalf. Cummins gave us $7,000 in rebates over parts and labor. Then we ended up with towing damage as well, broken drive ahaft and broken shocks on drive axle. So we fought with them as well. They paid for shaft and we bought the koni shocks.
Cummins has updated the head so the issue should be resolved but it is really poor to not own up to the issue and recall the engines. If you need anyhing let me know.
