The Cummins ISX 600 HP engine just got bigger. Cummins has increased the available power on their biggest MH engine to 650 HP and a wooping 1950 ft. lbs. torque. I guess we will be seeing the upped HP model in at least the London Aire and maybe even the King Aire.

Have heard that the reason all the Cummins engines for '07 have increased HP is due to a change in the way they measure the HP. Maybe someone can shed some light? Thought there were standards, but maybe not.

It'll have to be the King Aire, as the LADB is out of production.

Thanks Dirk. I was not aware that the LA was to be discontinued however in previous post I did predict the dropping of them. No insult to those with them. They got a steal on a top shelf custom coach . Mucho coach for the bucks. A Newmar icon of their highest line, maybe ever.

Yes, there are industry standards by SAE for the way engines are tested and HP etc is measured. They can not arbitrarily be changed by one company.

The LADB has already been discontinued, to be brought back in 2010 at a lower price.

You would think they might want to take it off their web site?

Newmar has traditionally been internet and web site challenged.

Not entirely true as the SAE standard does not require any certification of the actual measured HP(Certified SAE starting in 2005 is optional). Since the Cummins HP is "advertised HP" it is quite possible they are measuring is differently than previously and may or may not have increased.

It's very interesting to hear that the ISX is going up to 650 hp and torque at 1950. I was in the uderstanding that the torque was held down because Allison didn't have a tranny that could handle it. I thought that the 4000 series tranny maxxed out at 1850 ft lbs of torque. I understand that there is a German tranny, ZF ten speed, that can handle an excess of 2000 ft lbs of torque. I think Newell uses it with the ISX setup.
Does anyone have any additional info on this?

The 4000MH is supposedly rated for up to 650 HP 1950 ft. lbs. torque. While that takes then right to the rating it is similar to the ISL with a 3000MH having 1200 ft. lbs. torque rating and the engine being exactly that also.
The German made ZF transmission is offered in the Newell for one. It is escentually a automatic shifting manual tranny which boasts 10 speeds. When you start off from a stop, say with your foot right into it, it takes off. When the RPM reaches max in each gear the RPM drops to an idle, the next gear drops in and the power comes up again. I did not like the feeling at all. Give me the power shift of Allison. To me I much prefer Allison than the ZF.

I've been through this in past at Cummins. I do know that the standard did identify how the engine was to be presented for test, the ambient conditions in test cell, etc. However, before I say any more I want to check current status with my contact at Cummins who is out of office till month end. I'll come back with an answer when he is available to talk to me.

But for those that can't squeeze an ISX into their budget or into their existing coach, there is an option.
The More Power! ISB Mod Kit. Yes, that's right, you can kick up the power, and more than just a notch. MORE POWER!
H.P. before 300
H.P. after 4760
Torque before 760
Torque after 6200
0 to 60 before 26.8 sec.
0 to 60 after 5.9 sec.
Fuel consumption before 9.8 MPG
Fuel consumption after 9.8 GPM (gal. per mile)
Expected engine life before 500,000 miles
Expected engine life after 6 miles
The More Power Kit, is OEM approved and does not affect the warranty,..... much. This may vary with state. We only checked with out of your mind state.
So order today. Be the first on your block.......actually you'll be the first to buy one anyway. Makes a great gift for that guy or gal that has everything.
