Cummins Onan RV QD 8000

I am trying to find out what specific type of coolant to add to my generator. Unbelievably, I called Cummins South Plains outlet near me and the lady in the parts department first told me that RV generators did not use coolant. Oh boy! Nothing she said after that was believable to me. Reviewed manual and it said use ethylene glycol 50/50.

What do you use? Are there coolants already 50/50 mixed?

When we flushed our ISL coolant system to change to Final Charge, we had the generator flushed and cleaned too (replace the hoses and thermostat at the same time). This way I carry one extra gallon of Final Charge with me when I travel, and can use it to top off both engine and generator.

$.02 - has worked well for us!

Best,
Smitty

What Smitty said if you want to flush and change. If you are just trying to top off check the color. If it's green you can get universal premixed antifreeze to get you by until you can flush it. If I flush mine I will go to final charge and change the thermostat and temp sender at the same time.

Don....The newer coaches are using (OAT) Organic Acid Technology coolant. It doesn't require testing with strips like the old stuff did. Once installed, it will pretty much last the life of the generator. One of the more popular brands is "Final Charge" as mentioned above. Many auto parts store sell it in a 50/50 configuration. If you can find a gallon of the concentrate, garb it.

It's been awhile, but I think your generator takes about 2 - 2.5 gallons. The problem with them is that they're slow to drain and difficult to refill. Loosen the drain plug and then open the filler cap on top to drain. If you want to flush the system, use a couple of gallons of distilled water.

I like to add the concentrate first because you generally don't get all the water out. If you find concentrate, add a half gallon and then fill the rest with 50/50. Last time I did mine, I had to fill it, start it, (would shut off because it was low on coolant) fill it some more until eventually it was full.
