Cummins operating temperature

I have a 330 ISC Cummins It runs about 175° on flat ground. It runs about 180° on hills. In reading other threads it seems I am running a bit cool. I know cooler is better than the alternative but I wonder if I might get better fuel mileage if it was running at the proper temp. Thanks in advance.

...agree, 185 degrees is pretty common ops temp, higher on grades .....unlike my 2003 engine, noticed that the Pegasus engine [circa 2005] did seem to run a bit warmer, like 195.....cant say what the newer EGR and DEF Cummins engines run at.....and yup, cooler temps will/can hurt MPG....

195 degrees. Keep your radiator clean.

My 2017 380ISL runs about 190-195 normally.

I run between 185 and 205. Normal cruising about 195. You might have a bad thermostat or bad cooling fan (fan locked up). I had this problem and was fixed by replacing the fan controller. I think you have a rear radiator, so it’s not the same setup as mine.

5.9 ISB overheating

Kinda new to the DP world. One thing that seems to be a common problem is overheating when going up hills. Mine does this, and I've tried down shifting, going slower, keeping rpm's around 2200, cleaning CAC/radiator. Nothing seems to work for long hills. Has anyone explored rigging a nozzle to spray water between the fan and CAC?

I can't imagine that your MH overheated since new.

You may have a bad radatior. Over time corrosion builds up inside the tubes insulating the hot coolant from the air flowing by.

Unless you can see the inner core tubes, its not easy to diagnose.

Spraying water on it isn't a fix.

I'm the 3rd owner of the 2000 Damon Ultrasport, the last owner said that she (traveling nurse) had that problem too. I've cleaned the CAC/radiator, but can't see if it's "clean". How big a job is pulling them out? Can a DIY'er tackle it?
It only does this on long hills, after on the road a couple of hours. As soon as I back off temps drop. Here in the mtns it is very aggravating.

The standard thermostat in the ISC is 180 degrees. Mine runs 178 to 180 on the flats.

My side rad 350 runs 178-180 on VMSpc and will go to 190 on big hills. But thats where I like it. Well away from any thermal issues
