RV D@ily Report

IRVINE, Calif. -- The California Air Resources Board today announced that Cummins paid $500,000 in violations for failing to properly retest its engines already in use, reports Truckinginfo.

"Every ounce of pollution counts," said CARB Enforcement Chief James Ryden. "Our laws exist for good reasons. All companies have to follow the rules and perform the required tests for the sake of our collective health."

As far as California goes pretty soon they will have to eat all their fruits and vegetables because no truckers will go there. I am all for a good clean air but I also think we have done more than our share compared to other parts of the world. This is maybe one to be pulled for being political but it is not, just my opinion on how much do we have to save the rest of the world when they don't seem to care.

What is the point of the original post? How does it serve the people who have Cummins engines in their MHs?

Perhaps the title was a little confusing, I thought so too but California only got a little more than a third of the fine that Cummins paid however the majority went the the EPA . (Feds)

I spoke to one industry executive who told me that EPA regulations in regard to emissions are getting really serious. His comment went something like this; If engine manufacturers don't meet the emission policy that is current law then we might just as well stick a 10,000 bill on each engine we ship and push it out the door.

It wouldn't take long at all at that rate to be out of the engine business.

Diesel engine manufacturers whether Cummings, Navistar, Isuzu, or Ford are especially cognizant of this and the stringent emission control requirements are one of the items that jack up the price of the engines. It's just something that we as RV'ers are going to have to recognize when we go and buy that new RV as we get that jaw dropping sensation when you compare a 2007 motorhome to a 2010 motorhome.

Cummins, Isuzu and Ford's implementation of SCR meets the Federal EPA guidelines and I expect that it would be in full compliance in California or anywhere else.

The story came from truckinginfo and major publication in the diesel industry. In the article we see where US industries are bound to improving the quality of the air we breathe the most basic of necessities. It is a shame however that in other parts of the world that will ultimately exceed populations of 1 Billion+ people, no such requirements exist.

How clean is clean? Look at the advances the industry has made over the past 15 or 20 years yet the goal post continues to move. Like it or not, there is a contingent of people in the EPA who have the goal of regulating the diesel engine out of existence. Its all for the children, who wants to breathe dirty polluted diesel fumes? As technology allows even more finite measurements of whatever, the rules imposed on the engine manufacturers will continue to become even more restrictive, costs will continue to rise and more jobs will be placed in jeopardy.

FleetMan, Thanks for joining the conversation and sharing your thoughts. The 2012 Emissions regulations I expect are going to be the last of these EPA requirements for the near term. I believe that the NOx is supposed to be down to 0.20 g/bhp-hr. This level of compliance is currently being achieved by most all manufacturers using hardware and EPA credits. As far as I know - no one is meeting that number at the tail pipe but it will happen I understand.

SCR does it with DEF and AEGR does it in cylinder. That said both of these technologies should be able to meet the number at the tail pipe using additional technology. Wouldn't it be something if the SCR group begins to do more in cylinder burning and that AEGR adds a solid DEF to it's exhaust components.

Next the Feds want to UP the MPG ratings on a lot of machines and engines. I'm not sure where a Class 6 or 8 diesel will fit into that mix.

In my opinion I do not believe that anyone is out to kill diesel engines. Right now these engines are emitting cleaner exhaust than the typical environment into which it is placed especially metropolitan areas. The typical exhaust stream only contains N and H2O.

Must not had any effect on Cummins. Just more than doubled the dividends on their stock.

Cummins and everyone else is going to have to meet and exceed those requirements or long term it just won't work out for the share holders. Wouldn't you agree?

"Every ounce of pollution counts," said CARB Enforcement Chief James Ryden.

What a crock.

Whats James Ryden doing about Japans nuclear leakage drifting into California?

These clowns (CARB) are the reason we cant even buy a real jerrycan anymore.

(we all know what a horrific environmental impact jerrycans have)

This is nothing more than another "revenue run" against a visible target that has nowhere to send the bill to but us.

I like my clean air- but Kalifornia has gone too far banning and stickering everything but the kitchen sink.

Uncle Dave

The fine comes out to less than one dollar per engine. Slap em on the hand and keep making money. Don't want to send more jobs overseas.
