Wondering what is different about these two engines. Is the ISL a stroked bored ISC? I have a 330 ISC and getting a 400 ISL in a new mg.

The current 8.9L ISL engine is derived from the 8.3L ISC series Cummins. The ISL is NOT derived from the old 10L L-series Cummins.

Is the size the only difference? Same physical size?

HERE'S some info released when the ISL was introduced. An excerpt follows:
Quote:
|
The ISL diesel carries a bore x stroke of 4.49 in. x 5.69 in. (114 mm x 144.5 mm) for an overall displacement of 8.9 L. Again, another family resemblance is the bore size, which is identical to the ISC engine.
The block, a gray iron unit features cast-in ribs for enhanced stiffness. "If you look at the block, it's really, from a casting standpoint very similar to the ISC block," said James D. Kahlenbeck, chief engineer of the ISL. "It's basically derivative of the known ISC platform, with some different machining because of various heavy-duty design requirements."

Bottom line is that it is a different engine block. Similar to the ISC design and derived from it, but not just a stroked ISC.

If you have the option, better if it is already on there, do consider the two speed fan or the one from Source Engineering. They will give you between 25 and 35 hp to the rear tires and the noise level will be half of the stock fan. This is on a rear radiator 400 ISL. I was offered the option but did not go for it. I sure wish I had but then I would never had know there could be such a big improvement in acceleration, mileage, and reduction in noise.

Here's my understanding of the Cummins engines:
ISB: 5.9/6.7
ISC: 8.3
ISL: 8.9
ISM: 10.8
ISX: 14.9

The ISL utilizes the same block and head as the ISC. The ISL has a different crankshaft to increase the stroke. The ISC is 5.31" stroke vs the ISL at 5.69" stroke. Bore is 4.49" for both.
ISL ECM settings are different from ISC.
Here are the Base Engine Data Sheets which include some good data on oil pressures and flow volumes as well as cooling system information.

Looking at the specs, it appears a swap of an ISL for an ISC might be feasible. Has anyone looked into this. Would love to have a little more torque!
