Primarily ECU tuning and bigger injectors in the RV engine. 275 injectors were used by some owners in the early 24v (VP44 injection pump) Dodge Rams as the first "hop-up" from the factory configuration and were worth, IIRC, 25 or 30 RWHP.

I believe the RV engine also had a 2 piece exhaust manifold versus a 1 piece for the Dodge variant.

The 5.9 24V in 1998.5 to 2002 Dodge Rams was originally rated 235/460 (non-HO) and 245/505 (HO).

The MH ISB has a 16 qt oil pan and a 15,000 mile oil change and the Dodge pickup has a smaller pan and more frequent oil changes. Beyond that there could be other differences. Cummins can tailor engines for specific customers, for example a 260 HP ISB may have different parts than a 275 ISB. That makes it hard to conclude that if one ISB is upgraded to 300 HP then my 260 HP ISB can. My ISB build can be different.

Yep, 11 quarts with the filter change for the Ram.

I hope that 53 blocks that have lasted thus far are the better ones and will not have a problem. I have read several posts over the last nine years of MHs with 53 block that have cracked and leaked coolant, but that doesn't mean that a large percentage of the blocks are failing. I personally know a MH owner whose 53 block cracked in the first four years and about 50,000 miles. He upped his power from 260 HP to 275 HP.

J Walker; I had a 4year extended warranty (good sam) that I purchased with
the coach in 2007. Coach had 31k miles when I bought it. My cost was only $1100.00.
That was a good warranty. All gone now.

You probably have a 53 block. You can check by looking at the underside of the engine. A big 53 is cast into the block.

Wizard,

The 1998.5-2002 ISB motorhome and medium duty truck engine has a entirely different electronic engine control system that the same year Dodge/Cummins engine. The majority of performance tuners for that Dodge/Cummins engine will Not work on the motorhome/truck engine. Been there tried that.

If you talk to Cummins tech support they will make it VERY CLEAR the engine in the Dodge is NOT a Cummins engine it is a Dodge/Cummins engine built by Cummins to Dodge specs.

Just for a little more information, on the #53 Cummins block cracking:
Cummins #53 Block Info

From what it says, that most of them seem to be broken because of starting up cold and put under load. I don't think the motorhomes are as susceptible because they are started and are alowed to air up, and by the time they get out of a CG, before they are really put under heavy load.

I don't know if this has shed any light on the #53 block, I will say,"knocking on wood", so far so good with my engine. I have the Banks system on, has been on since '05, and nearly 20,000 miles, and oh, BTW, I haven't dared look to see which block I have! LOL!!

But that's rear wheel HP so the engine power is much higher. If they get 280 at the wheels then you're well over 320 at the engine.

I have seen 0 reported in the last 9 years on any of the RV forums I go to.

All those 53 engines are now 12-13 years old. And probably have already cracked or they are not going to crack if they haven't by now.
Actually there's one being "talked" about on this site now. It's leaking and he asked if Cummins would help with the fix.

I will make it easy. You ahve a 275, you wish to bump it up 25 more HP, that is less than 10 percent so yes, No problem, no risk, in fact it might well already be there since that 275 is a "Median" range for that engine, and +/- 10 percent is likely well within the design parameters for said engine. The construction is just not all that accurate.
