The early 6.7L that was used in very light load service (grocery getting, around town commuting, etc.) had some sooting and other related issues that weren't generally experienced by trucks that were used in loaded applications (highway trailer towing, etc.) These were addressed by numerous reflashes and some hardware changes.

The newer trucks generally (I was taught to never say never) don't experience these problems. My truck hasn't been back to the dealer for anything other than routine service.

When I say "early" trucks, I mean the early 6.7 trucks. The 6.7L was introduced during the 2007 model year, so the 2007-8 trucks referred to in the article you linked are early 6.7L trucks. The 4th generation trucks which entered production in the 2010 model year using the upgraded 6.7L Cummins are basically trouble-free, as were the late (2009 model year) 3rd gen trucks.

The 5.9L trucks preceding the 6.7Ls did not have the DPFs.

I agree with what Rusty, has said and you can read about these issue on any of the Cummins engine/Dodge forums that are out on the internet.
I went through the early teething problems with my 08.
BTW I lost my DPF about 40K ago.
