ECM Updates

Have a 08 Cummins ISL. Someone mentioned to me that every couple of years I should have an ECM update at an appropriate location to update for the newest changes Cummins has learned to improve performance/mpg. I assume this would be a Cummins or similar shop. Anyone familiar with this-benefits/costs. Thanks!

Before I retired from Dodge/Cummins repair , the shop I was working for would be re-programing ECM's daily . The updates are not always the be all and end all for mileage and performance, and once performed cannot always be undone.
If I had $5 for every owner that came back swearing that we'd ruined his trucks mileage /performance I could have retired a year sooner.

JMHO: If it isn't broken , don't try to fix it.

Here is my post from an earlier thread concerning ECM updates...

Interesting outcome
A few weeks ago while driving down I65 the check engine light came on. Long story short I stopped at Cummins in Mobile, AL and the said the code was for either an EGR valve or the tubes. I made an appointment for them to figure out what was wrong and repair it. Yesterday was my appointment and I couldn't believe how lucky I got. Turned out after doing a bunch (hours worth) of tests it wasn't the EGR, it was the ECM. The mechanic showed me that I had five missing software updates to the ECM, the last one addressed the EGR. He uploaded all the updates and it passed every test they could do. When he was finished the boss had him hook up a laptop computer via the diagnostic port and go for a ride. He watched the engine in real time to make sure the valve was working correctly. Cummins Mid-South...good job!
