EGR and DPF Problems
My 2008 Cummins ISC 360 only has 62,000 miles on it, 99.9% on the open highway. Has anyone had any problems with EGR valves or DPF filters?
Thanks,

Your DPF should not be giving you any problems yet. EGR problems are unpredictable. One of the worst ideas any engine mfr. designed. Engineered to fail and there are no cures other than replacing components. Gets to be expensive. Yours should be good for a lot longer.

45,000 miles and on the second DPF, third turbo and two top end jobs. Yes a Cummins should go far longer than that!

Mr. D: The op has an ISC. You have an ISX that unfortunately is one of Cummins worst engines. The EGR system is a nightmare and the camshafts go flat. The other Cummins engines do not have those severe problems.

Gentlemen,
After a long trip, I came home with multiple problems. Only symptom was that it would not start. My mechanic (not Cummins tech) thought it was a fuel pump problem, so replaced the lift pump. Made no difference. Finally called in a Cummins tech and diagnosed a bad cam and bad EGR. The cam gear had slipped on the cam, a common Cummins problem I'm told. Got it running, but then started to smoke. Diagnosed a cracked DPF. I think that might have been caused by something my mechanic did during his trial and error phases. All very expensive.
Bottom line...if you don't use a Cummins mechanic they must have Cummins software on their scanner.
Poorer but wiser,

RV Steve: You should change your signature so we have some information on your unit and in this case the engine. Your link to Rawze is good info. Most Owner Operators know of his expertise on the ISX. If I had an ISX I would bite the bullet and do a full DPF and EGR delete. Not something I would normally recommend but the only other choice is sell the unit ! Rawze's mods are interesting but a lot of work

My 2012 ISC with 13K miles is in the shop now for an EGR fault code. They replaced the EGR but same codes. They have now been going back and forth with Cummins on trouble shooting.
I am very disappointed with Cummins tech support as to how long it takes the dealer to get answers. After the tech tries the recommended test or repair it is more than 2 hours until the Cummins rep. responds.

Cummins Engine problems
My first symptoms were no power, unable to accelerate and low boost pressure. After a few blocks, it corrected itself and I was able to climb over the Sierras and made it home OK. Two weeks later, it would not start. Called a local diesel shop to check it out. Long story short, he was completely unqualified to work on this problem, and did not have the Cummins Insite diagnostic software, so was just guessing. After two moths, they gave up and called in the Cummins tech from Reno. Found the EGR problem right away. Was not a fuel problem. Also found slipped cam gear. He also replaced my DPF, but failed to check for reason it had burnt up. $2500 later I have to replace the DPF again because an injector is bad and is flooding one cylinder with fuel which accumulates in the exhaust canister, then ignites and melts the DPF.
Bottom line...if you think you have fuel problems, think EGR first before you spend a lot of money unnecessarily.
Live and Learn,
RV Steve
