Electronic Control Module

Is the electronic control module the device that sends data to the OBD port? Is there a way to test it?
Where would it be located on a Cummins 8.3 ISC? On the engine or elsewhere?

Thanks for any responses!

ECM on the passenger/fuel side, closer to the front of the Engine. Other than clean, lube connections, I am not one to mess with sensitive pins at the connectors. There is info on line to do it!

I don't have a Cummins so my port is on the left side of the steering wheel under the dash, 6 or 9 prong and I also have the same port in a rear bay. Need to get something like the Scangauge D and plug into it to get all the reading off your motor, only way I know how to test. It does not look like the old OBD 11 style port. This is where the ECM will send all its info for a read out.

or you could get the SilverLeaf.

For monitoring and readout I use ScangaugeD. Less expensive, not as detailed as Silverleaf but has served me well.

If your motor runs fine, I would be looking at the Scangauge first. Have you pulled it out and plugged it back in. My Silverleaf got unplugged and took me a few to figure out what happened.

Seems it was related to a battery isolator/alternator issue.
Replaced the alternator and itís been working fine now.

a 1999 cummins doesn't have OBDII.
OBDII is 1996 and newer passenger cars and light truck (ie; pickup trucks).
Yours is likely J1708.
