Engine Life Expectancy
Just curious if anyone has information on the average mileage life expectancy of Cummins diesel RV engines with good maintenance. Is there a significant difference in life expectancy from one engine platform to the next (ISC, ISL, ISM , ISX etc.)? I average about 7500 miles per year with my 2001 Newmar Mountain Aire which has the ISC 8.3 350 hp turbo diesel. Thanks.

I haven't seen any other threads dealing with this issue, it will be interesting to see responses.
I use to work in the underground mining industry, a very harsh environment. Maintenance was the key. Oil changes 150-200 hrs and frequent air filter changes. We could get 10,000 hours on an engine if it was taken care of. Rebuilds were ~1/2 the cost of a new engine and if done right we could get close to the same hours.

I have an ISB which is on the low end of life expectancy and I'm at 200,000 miles. So I would think at 7500 miles per year, your good for at least the next 30 years. Giddy up.

As Jim & Ron have stated, with good maintenance, I can't imagine one of these engines needing a rebuild from accumulated Milage. The ISC and ISL share a basic block and are considered medium duty. The ISM and ISX are considered heavy duty.

When I asked Cummins people at FMCA rallies they say 500,000 would be 90% of HD diesels with some going 750K plus.

Maintenance is the key word for longevity on those engines. The small ISB average 300K, the big block heavy duty ISM ISX probably close to 750K.
The ISC and ISL medium size diesel engines around 500K miles before they will need to be over hauled.

We don't know the miles for sure on our 92 Eagle, but at least 140,000 probably more, after we got it my husband changed oil way more frequently then required. We are doing an engine rebuild as we speak.
They think the problem was due to the K & N filter, he said they are good
but if not kept clean and oiled routinely they can cause issues. We think
the engine got dusted, one of the cylinders had the rings in thousands of
pieces, 2 cylinders had issues. I had cleaned it well and oiled but first
time I did it, it was beyond filthy, I'm not sure if it had been done or not
done for years before. You couldn't tell by looking.
I kept trying to find one or have one fabricated, they said they were just
made special for that model year. Finally I had a new frame and regular
paper filter installed but to late I guess. It ran very well with good mileage, but was using more and more oil, so we decided to keep the old girl and just fix it.
So I think most of it is maintenance they will just run and run if maintained, our shop, Scheid Diesel, said it will last for many many years to come, almost everything in that engine is new. It's a C 8.3 mechanical engine with sleeves.
Now I'm going to freshen up the interior and hope to get the nose painted if this doesn't eat our check book alive, it has sure taken big bites out of it! LOL!
Hope to have her home by Thanksgiving then I'm working on freshening the interior.

Give the motor clean air, clean fuel, and change the oil on a regular basis and it will out last the rest of the motorhome

How old are you? to get to 500,000 miles will take you over 66 years. Just saying you probably need to drive more miles per year to get it to first overhaul.

Sad to hear about your problem. I use to be a fan of K&N but found test where they flow more dirt than the Cummins speck allowed, at their peak performance. The main selling feature is the K&N flow more air. This soundes good till you understand the stock Air filter flows more air than the engine can use.

That model came with them on it, it was in the book that came with it about them so from day 1. Also the odometer wasn't working when we
bought it. We went by the inspection sticker but who knows if it was
working then, I kept track with my GPS and along the way DH put on
an hour meter for the genny and engine. We got it for a good price so made it not that bad overall to repair. Besides we have half the couch new now I think!! Was no point in ditching it and starting over, besides I like driving it. I do wish I had slides but its ok without them. I have been driving it about 5 years now and will till I can no longer safely drive it so
hope to get our moneys worth out of it.
The diesel shop guy recommended we stay with the paper filters, I agree.

My ISX has dropped a valve in #6 twice in 45,000 miles, had three turbos and two DPF's. And most of the cost has NOT been covered by warranty.

Unless you have a 2007 EPA ISX 650, and to a lesser extent 600!!

Thanks so much to all who responded. The issue of engine life expectancy has always been of interest to me. I am considering a 2006 unit with the ISM block that has 135,000 miles, so this is what brought the subject to the forefront for me. I found all of the responses helpful, so thanks again to all, and happy trails!
