Wow! Never though my post would draw so much interest. Some of you guys sound like you have a PHD in mechanics. I am just happy to now know that my older 240 horse pushing 27,100 pounds is not too far out of the ordinary. Hitting the road on Tuesday with the coach to Colorado Springs from Missouri pulling our toad, about 800 miles. Thanks!

Yup - climbing the hills you will be able to look around and enjoy the scenery instead of having to keep an eye on the traffic you are trying to pass.

Enjoy your vacation.

I am of the Tim Allen school of thought "MORE POWER" is always betta but since there is a linear relationship between horsepower and torque via the formula HP = Torque x RPM ÷ 5252 ....
source (Power and Torque: Understanding the Relationship Between the Two, by EPI Inc.

it's more of a discussion of WHERE/WHEN you want the torque and HP @ high rpm or low rpm
*******************************

And you are gonna LOVE Colorado Springs !!! we just got back and has something for everyone - very touristy or very native - great jeep trails and vistas and 25 degrees cooler than here! (if you need any GREAT, inexpensive mobile service while there 719-493-5354 - great guy and good)

We made 800 mile trip to Colorado Springs pulling the toad with no issues. I am retired Army so we are staying on the Air Force Academy at their Famcamp at $28 a night. It is beautiful here this time of the year.

I have a Ford F350 with the 7.3 l International Navistar Diesel. My F350 has way less weight than your motohome has, and comapred to my 30' long motorhome with the Ford V10 with 5 Star tuning, I have the feeling that the F350 is way under powered!
I can't even imagine how under-powered a heavy motorhome with a marginally larger and marginally stronger engine feels.

Some of us just have to take it easy and slow!

I have the 6 L (325 HP) Navistar in our F450 and with the 5er was close to 30,000 lbs. With the Cummins 450 in the coach we run around 53,000 lbs. There is much better performance in the coach than the truck and trailer. Part of it is due to the differences in rpm IMO.

Six ratios in an efficent package (alison mh3000) has a bit to do with it.

Yup - probably a good part of the difference. The Ford has a 5 speed with overdrive. Not often will it shift out of overdrive to 5 but mostly to 4.

Fuel economy on the Ford is slightly better when towing and a lot better without the trailer! LOL

Torque

Without torque you would not be able to move! HP falls off fast on hills untill the engine gets in its torque band. Torque over HP always. Unless your coasting down a hill or home changing the oil

I put a Banks system on our '02 DSDP ISC 350/1050. And yes, it did make a big difference. Rated, conservatively at 435/1200 afterwards.
