I have an 03 ISC with about 70K on the odometer. Several people have told me the engine sounds like it has an exhaust leak. I have listened to it as my wife drove it and I don't notice much difference from when it was new. Power is good. Turbo boost got up to 23PSI going up a hill the other day. Exhaust brake seems to be working OK, but no big hills to really test it. Should I worry about this? Is there any other symptom beside sound ? Thanks in advance.

I'd recommend checking it out, from the engine to the exhaust tip. If you have an exhaust leak and depending where it is, you may be flirting with a potential fire hazard.

Jim.

Take a coverall, roll it up into a ball, have your wife cover the exhaust pipe with the coverall or several towels folded together, while you check all around the exhaust manifold, turbo, pipes and muffler for leaks.

If there is a leak this is a sure way to find it.

Henry.

You may have this problem, take a look.
If it doesn't download for you go to Quick Tips link below and it will be "Cracked ISM Turbo" link.

My exhaust leak was at the exhaust manifold and turbo where it connects to the manifold. The gaskets failed and I could see black deposits and feel air around some of the exhaust manifold tubes when the engine was running. The technician noticed it was leaking just by listening.

Mr. Miller.

I guess you never experienced an exhaust leak?

You don't have to roll up the coverall, just fold it neatly, cover the exhaust outlet with the coverall (if you use your hand, to cover the tailpipe, this would be way too hot), and you will hear where the leak is!

As a service you really should report this on your thread regarding the engine whine. It is a way others can learn.

J-57 engine in a North American F-100 probably has very little to do with this situation.

Assume most any piece of cloth will do? Like a towel?
Henry.
PS - It's handles time in the F-100 (ejection)

I took off the bedroom floor section and the leak was obvious. It is the exhaust manifold gasket near 1 of the center cylinders. You can see the soot and feel the leak. The bolts on the manifold look difficult to remove so I am going to take it to Cummins to get it fixed. Thanks, everyone, for your help and advice. Jim

That is too bad about the exhaust manifold gasket. It is time to find a good shop. The exhaust manifolds on Cummins engines are common failure points and I won't be surprised to find my ten year old ISB having the problem. A cracked or warped manifold is often the problem. They make after market manifolds that come in three parts instead of one to help reduce warping problems.

Just had our exhaust manifold gasket repaired for $1,500.

If a simple remove the bolts, install, new metal gaskets and new bolts, the cost appears to be about $800.

I had two frozen bolts that broke. That added $700 parts and labor.

My manifold was resurfaced for $85. So I avoided the cost of a new manifold.

I had the above done at a independent repair shop that I trust.
