Anyone know the micron rating for the fs1022?

and is there a lower micron filter it could be replaced with?

In most Cummins fuel systems there are two "fuel filters". The FS1022 is the pre filter but primarily a water seperator. Playing with it's micron rating (usually 10) will affect it's true function. The next filter is just that, a filter and might be the one to experiment with regarding micron rating. Cat is down to a 2 micron here. Keep in mind the smaller the micron, the faster the filter will "plug up" and the higher the cost.
BTW, micron is only one of the important measurements of a filter. Efficiency is just as important. A 10 micron filter with 90% efficiency rating "catches" 90% of the 10 micron particles so a 5 micron filter with 50% efficiency may be money spent for nothing.
I am further advised that the present micron measurement systems are good down to approx. 4.5 microns therefore a 2 micron system is actually a 4.5 system

The micron rating is measured by the Beta ratio. There are 2 type of ratings, based on absolute & nominal. Nominal filter are usually based on cellulose media, better known as paper. Synthetic media is usually referred to as absolute.

Cellulose media ratings are usually based at a beta ratio of 75.
Synthetic media ratings are usually based at a beta ratio of 200 to as high as 1000. The higher the beta ratio number, the higher the efficiency.

Cheaper filters are usually made from paper. Paper & water usually don't work together. Synthetic filters cost more, & usually are not affected by water. You will usually want to synthetic filters to protect your fuel & motor oils. Going to tite on filters can cause a system to build up a differential pressure, which could cause your system to starve itself if not protected by a built in bypass valve. Trust your engine manufacturers to spec out your filters and micron size.

As they say, you can pay me now or pay me later!
