Hi,

Please answer a few questions for me ASAP.

1) What was the 1st year for an "inter-cooler" on a 8.3L Cummins engine, and, 1st model year in a class "A" motor home? The earlier engine with "after-cooler" was called a "6CTA." Was there a comparable "short code" description for the engine with an "inter-cooler?" e.g. "6CT?"

2) What was the 1st year for the "Bosch P-7100" injector pump on a Cummins 8.3L in a class "A" motor home?

Thanks,

Richard Teague

Richard,

Not sure of the dates but here is what my engine manual states...

6C8.3 is Naturally aspirated
6CT8.3 is Turbocharged
6CTA8.3 is Aftercooled
C8.3 is Charge air cooled (intercooled)

I have the intercooled on my coach.

Thanks for the excellent info. Monaco PR told me (they thought-- were not strong in their conviction) the Cummins 8.3. "charge air" was developed mid 1995 and started appearing in motor coachs in the 96 model year. Do you think yours was late 1995-- just before the 96's came out? Do you know if you have the P-7100 injector pump? -- your rated HP?

My coach was manufactures March 1995, 300HP, and I don't know which injector pump.

Thanks a lot Jimmy-- I'm wondering if that is the coach or the engine. My engine has a plate on it that indicates that it was manufactured in 1990, there is another plate that indicates a "1991 chassis," and the coach was titled as a 1992, and, Cummins indicates that it was "put in service" in 1993.

Could anyone possibly have a 1994 model coach with Cummins 8.3L made for the U.S market with an "Inter-Cooler" rather than an "after-cooler?"

There are 2 versions of the 8.3 Cummins. I believe the 1st was considered mechanical, & the 2nd considered electronic. I think the reference model, was targeting the injector pump. Search the Cummins forum for all of your answers.

Cummins "C" engines for automotive applications are turbocharged. The terms 'aftercooler' and 'charge air cooler' are referring to the same process. Aftercoolers on other Cummins engines generally were jacket water aftercoolers, a radiator that inlet air from the turbo passed through to lower inlet air temps. The charge air coolers do the same thing only they are an air to air heat exchanger.....a radiator to cool the compressed air coming from the turbo.

If you MH has the turbocharger compressor section air going to what looks like a radiator, it is CAC. The aftercooler is installed on the cylinder head on the engine intake manifold side (opposite the exhaust manifold and turbo side).

Send me your engine serial number. I can dig into Quick Serve On Line, a Cummins site available to subscribers.

Thank a lot Spike for the response. I think Jimmy F has one of the earliest CAC's. I know the "Quick Serve" specs on my 6CTA. If Jimmy F would be so kind as to submit his engine serial# to you or his service provider-- then we would know what injector pump he has. The earliest C 8.3's for "industrial" applications had a Bosch P3000 inline pump. Jimmy F might very well have a P7100 pump. I know that the P7100 first appeared in trucks in 94-- but I do not know re MH's.

Yes Chris and Lisa, That helps a lot-- confirmation that the P7100 appeared in a 94 model motor home. Does your engine manual designate your engine as a "C 8.3" with an "air to air", or "charge air" inter-cooler? "6CTA" designates the fore runner that was "after-cooled." Do you know your HP rating?

For all interested parties. Cummins keeps a complete record of your engine specifications including pump and governor by engine serial#(only 8 characters long). Any subscriber, or anyone with access, to Cummins "Quick Serve Online" can get those specs for you in only seconds. This info is absolutely current and accurate-- unlike engine or coach manuals.

As I said in an earlier post on this thread, get me the serial number. I have employee access to QSOL.
