At the Chicago Auto Show this week, Dodge announced the availability in 2Q11 of a high output 6.7L Cummins in the Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups. Article with specifics HERE. With this upgrade, a 3500 dually with 68RFE 6-speed automatic and 4.10 rear axle is rated for 30,000 lbs GCWR and up to 22,700 lbs trailer tow rating.

Upgrading the old Cummins might be cheaper. This works GREAT on my '07 6.7 2500 Dodge:

I'm sure it is, if you want a BOMBed truck. Heck, I was making 347/762 AT THE REAR WHEELS (about 400/900 at the flywheel) with a very mild 2002 ETH 24 valve (Edge EZ, injectors, intake and exhaust). I've been there and done that and prefer to keep the warranty in effect with all the electronics on modern emission controlled diesel engines.

That's because Dodge was running way behind GM and Ford in the diesel GCWR area. GM is 29.2k, Ford is 29k, and Dodge is 25.4k.

Actually, Dodge is now up to 30,000 GCWR and 22,700 trailer tow rating as I mentioned in post #1. Prior to the introduction of the HO, Dodge was at 26,000 GCWR.

make sure you need a 4:10 rear end as it will lose you about 22% in fuel mileage opposed to a 3.73. Consult with the experts before buying, (unless of course you own a couple oil wells or . . . )

Can you cite a source for a 22% reduction in fuel economy?

With the 4.10s and the 68RFE double overdrive automatic transmission, 60 MPH in 6th equates to 1612 RPM with the 4.10s and only 1466 RPM with the 3.73s. Nothing at all like the 2000 RPM at 60 MPH in my former 2002 Dodge Cummins 5.9L with 4.10s and the NV5600 6-speed manual transmission.

On the TDR Forum site and other Cummins forums most users are reporting a 1 to 2 MPG difference in fuel economy between the 4:10 and 3:73 gear sets. So if my math is correct this is about a 7 to 14 percent difference.

When I get time I'll try an re-find the info that gave me those figures. I probably deleted the bookmarks after I decided and bought my truck.

You can't have both...want the high GCWR...get the 4.10, want better fuel economy (and a lower GCWR), get the 3.73.

They almost have them Dodge's were they can actually pull something. Now if they could just get rid of the black smoke everytime you step on it and that 6 cyl sound they would have something. Ha
Just kiding. Dodge has come a long way since there first Diesel.

It's a shame they get a powerfull motor and then crap it down with catilytics.

Rusty
nit wanting to incite a riot
BUT
my ford had 4.30 rear gears withe 6.0 and my freind has teh same truck...cept with 4.10 gears and i always had 12-13 pulling and he gets 9. oh and we had the same numbers on the rollers to the rear wheels.
325/675 tq

i like to see the different brands touting higher numbers and all
it
its good for business

these newer engines like to spin a bit faster to help breathing and keeping US in the powerband.

i say congrats on cummins, not dodge the b series was a superb engine way before it got married to dodge.
