Installing A Coolant FIlter on ISC, ISL

In a fit of cost reduction, Cummins produced some ISC and nearly all ISL without coolant filter heads. There is a location on the RH side of the cylinder block to the rear of the lube oil filter plus another location further back near the rear where the filter head assembly can be mounted.

I am attaching a line drawing from Cummins Quick Serve On Line web based service manual and parts book.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing.

Any idea of cost for it, plus filter?

Is it all self contained, with no other external hoses?

What is the pipe plug for?

Is this just a plug and play bolt on accessory?

Anything more you know, I would be interested.

Thanks

Spike,
I took a look at mine and see where they used the center two holes as the supply and return lines for the water cooled turbo. I have a pre DPF ISL 400 in my 08 coach.

What filter are you currently running? It should have one that is both fuel/water separating as well as meeting the fluid cleanliness needs of the system. Is this an issue of hard to service or short operating life?

Sorry, I do not have access to costs from a Cummins distributor.

Gary:
No issue with it, just thought two filters would work better, like on a CAT, one prefilter (30 micron as I remember) and a 2 micron final one.

Well, I did have one issue: be sure the water drain is CLOSED before turning on the fuel pump!!

I added a Coolant Filter to my ISC. Pics are at: logthumper's photos and albums on webshots or Click on Logthumpers Photos at botom of this post.
Click on "Makeing it ours". Filter pics are on the 2nd page. The two shut off valves allow changeing the filter withour loss of coolant. Location allows for easy checking and maintenance.

Caterpillar engines have the main fuel filter on the pressure side of the transfer (lift) pump thus adding a suction side filter works well. Cummins engines, yours in particular have the main fuel filter as a suction filter. Adding another may cause excessive inlet restriction to the lift pump. The result would be that neither filter would reach its potential for capacity as the combined restriction must not exceed 4PSID on the suction side. You can do it, just be aware that with some plugging the ECM will sense the reduced fuel and derate the engine.
