Intermittent Stop Engine Light & Buzzer - Reduced Power

Hi Guys & Gals,

I have a 2005 Winnebago 40 with a 400 hp Cummings ISL Freightliner chassis/engine group. I have 16,000 miles on my unit. Shortly after starting the stop engine light and buzzer comes on. Oil pressure is pegged out, then after engine warms oil pressure goes to half buzzer and light go out.

After driving a bit stop engine light and buzzer comes back on, then off again. Never any additional heating issues. Was running paraffin based premium Rotello, now 15W40 Royal Purple full synthetic. Thought maybe a non paraffin oil, fully synthetic would cause any potential clogging issues to go away. Did not change things.

Now realizing must be an electronic issue. Unit now has gone to reduced power, most likely due to the intermittent prolonged stop engine notification. Have an appointment with Western Star Freightliner Houston this month to run diagnostic.

Before my appointment one of my diesel mechanics told me to disconnect all the batteries to reset the computer and see if this problem goes away. What is everyone's thought on doing this?

Hi Brian; It could not hurt to try rebooting the ECM. Since I am not familiar with a Winnebago, only Monaco's mostly, as long as you are not plugged into shore power and the generator is not running, you should be just able to turn off you chassis battery disconnect switch. That should remove 12V power to the engine ECM. It is worth a try as I have had many false warnings from systems that were just a glitch. Many times by removing 12V power has restored normal operation for me. Shut power off for at least two to five min. Turn power back on and see what happens. If the problem continues, more diagnostics are needed. Let us know if this works. Good luck.

disconnecting power to the ECU will not reset anything. Non-volatile memory (EEPROM). You need to clear the memory codes.

The computer is sensing a low oil condition, which is then causing the buzzer and low power. When the sensor reads correctly, then it says All ok, go back to full power.
Now, If memory serves me correctly you have a MMDC / Medalion on the dash. Go into maintenance mode and you can read the codes AND clear them.

Brian,
As for your reduced power.
Is the "stop engine" light coming on during acceleration while you are driving?
Have you changed your fuel filters recently?
I am wondering if you are having a fuel supply problem instead of electronic issues.

I kind of had the same thing happen to me but mine is a Cat C-9. Coming home from Eugene we stopped at a rest stop and when I can to a stop my dash light came on so I looked at my Silverleaf and my oil pressure read O so I turned it off. Got out an checked the oil everything OK so I started it up and my dash oil pressure gauge and Silverleaf where reading the same 25lbs at idle, so we headed out. Got on I-5 and my dash gauge read 45psi and the Silverleaf reading from the ECM was all over the place down to 26 up to 89psi and the dash reads 45psi. So when we came into town and we hit all the lights when I went to stop all the dash light would come on Silverleaf reads O dash read 25 so I had to put in to N and give it throttle to keep it running. Got home removed the oil pressure sender that feeds the ECM, 3 wire sender now everything reads the same.

Do not attempt to reset the ECU by any means. There may be data in memory that will help to properly diagnose your problems. A reset often erases this valuable diagnostic data.

Faulty oil pressure sensors used to be common . The dealer will probably verify the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge and compare that with the oil pressure the ECM is seeing.
