ISC 8.3, skipping when climbing a hill.

Traveling through MN on I90, headed to Yellowstone. Began noticing a skip, (bump) in the engine today when climbing a hill. First thought it was transmission downshifting trying to find a gear to maintain cruise setting. Gradually has got worse. I began manual downshift to 5 at base of hill. This seemed to work for a bit, but eventually the skip (bump) returned while manually locked in 5th. It would skip multiple times while climbing. On flat ground, seems to run fine. Have checked fluid in transmission , ok. Checked fuel for water, ok. Currently in Sioux Falls. Thinking of taking it to Cummins Central tomorrow. Any thoughts ?

What he^ said
I will be willing to bet it's fuel delivery...specifically fuel filters partially clogged limiting fuel when higher demand is requested.

On a 2001 it could also be possibly the fuel lines are getting older and breaking down... that would show up in the filters...

but the easiest thing to check is your air filter - open the compartment and unscrew a few things by hand and you can see if it's an issue... (amazon sells filters too)

ours ran fine with a clogged up air filter, it was only when fuel filters went that it 'missed'...

this is what I found in our air filter housing, but still ran fine:

Went to Cummings Central Power today. Was throwing a couple codes related to fuel delivery. They believe it's likely the high pressure fuel pump. Big $$$ to replace. I had filters replaced just because. Was told I could continue to run, and that the pump would progressively get worse. Anyone have experience with continuing to operate a failing fuel pump.

Got an extended warranty ?
Even with the many problems with the new Good Sams finding places to work on it, still have an extended warranty that I pay monthly...

or at least sign up for Cummins Power Club that gives good discounts to members...

good luck !

The fuel filters are BEFORE the high pressure fuel lift pump. That's probably why it threw the codes.

Change the fuel filters FIRST before spending money on a part that you may not need to change.

However, if your fuel lift pump IS leaking, then YES, have it changed because if you don't it will take out the CAPS fuel delivery system which is VERY expensive, usually a couple thousand dollars or more.

BTW, replacing the fuel lift pump should NOT be expensive. The parts are maybe $300 and at the most 2 hours labor. I don't remember the exact cost to have mine replaced in the spring of 2015 plus all of my receipts are in Florida so I can't check.

My coach did this and replacing the fuel filters fixed the issue--it wasn't throwing any codes at the time though.

I had similar issues it was the EGR valve. They also took off the manafold to clean out all the soot. Good luck.

Thanks for all the input. After a day of debating the options and talking with my mechanic back in FL, I decided to continue my trip west. I had CoachNet and figured if the CAPS pump went out, I'd deal with it.

Thank the Lord, drove from Sioux Falls to Badlands NP without a single issue. So... I keep on keeping on, and thank the good Lord for blessings.

When my primary fuel filter would become ever so slightly blocked ours would buck and stumble, then take off. Usually after sitting at idle then attempting to accelerate.

I always carry spare fuel filters. At any hint of a problem I stop near the nearest diesel pump, pull the old one(s) off and fill the new one(s) with fuel. Install it and head down the road trouble free in about 15 minutes. If there's a real problem you'll know it soon but you have eliminated all of the time, money and chance of bad diagnostics quickly.

I think spare filters and knowledge needed to be able to change them is good insurance going forward. Thankfully this opinion wasn't to costly to obtain.
